I finally got my car back. I now have the 402BB installed. I have a 270 cam. A set of hiedman headers, mallory dist. 427 heads? I'm gonna check the casting #'s to be sure. Exhaust straight back. My block casting is 3902406. It's a four bolt main. I have a small overheating problem. I think I'll switch over to a big block fan clutch. I have a 165 thermostat....so that's a small problem we need to fix. I've also sheared a A/C bolt.

The main issue is we talked (mechanic & I) talked about 800cfm carb. We only put carb in writing not the size or the nomenclature. Anyway after researching I have what seems to be a modified Holley 650. #'s I can find are L7054. I also found this # on the base plate 12R 5395B (didn't research it). The book says this is a double pumper. I has been modified to be a single. I already have a 750 Edlebrock electric roughly 1 1/2 yrs old. The mechanic is swearing that the Holley 650 carb is bigger than the numbers list. Saying that it is bigger than my Edelbrock.
I really don't know what to do. Should I just put my Edelbrock back on. Should I keep what I have or have him convert it back to a double pumper. I'm also thinking if it was a double at one time why would he change it. Surely not for a BB. Maybe something is wrong with it anyway. :confused
If anyone has any info to offer it will be appreciated. Let me know if I'v missed something on the carb.

Actually I'm pretty happy with the car until now. Carb issues. If he cut these corners....What else? I've had a good mechanic friend check over the and everything else seems to be up to par.

I would stay with what you have. Edelbrock makes a good q-jet. The Holley is an unknown.

It sounds like you know what to do.......Get a carb that will feed the BB. Tell your mech to put the carb on the car that you want and not some "modified" version of one.
Make him a deal, put the 800 or 850cfm on the car, if it works you'll buy it minus the money you paid for the first one.

Thanks guys
Right now money is alittle funny. I will more than likely go with the edel for now and get some money back for his carb. He really has me between a rock and a hard place. The guys at BowTie transmissions are working pretty good with me. They modified a mount to work specifically with this trans. (tv cable to carb)
By the way BB 402 runs 80 mph at 2200 rpms. 90 at 2500 rpms.I really like that. Not so much for the gas mileage but overall drivablity as well. Will change the gearing later.

Anyway in order for my warranty to continue I must have the correct pressures to the trans. So I kinda want them to do it.
They will also trade out the parts for the carb (holley to edel) to help shave cost.

I guess I'll get a bigger carb later along with a hi-rise intake pending the amount of clearance that I have.

I really just can't believe that the mechanic is really pushing that the bore is bigger on the Holley. I'm just afraid that he won't willfully do anything to help. I'm just ready to finish all the work with him and cut all ties.

Has anyone double checked my Holley #'s just in case. I looked on the top of the carb. I can't seem to find any other #'s other than on the baseplate. That was the `12R number

You guys of CAC are the best. I often wonder when I see a vette pass by.....Is he one of the guys.......Only thing is I mainly see 96 and above here. I deal mainly with the C to the 3 forum. If anyone is in the SoCal area please let me know.

My .02 Worth....

Hello Ashman,
I know one thing for certain about your carb. problem, and it is this. If that Holley started life as a 650 cfm unit, there is nothing you can do to make it flow 800 cfm of air/fuel. with out toatally re manufacturing the 4 open/circular areas that you look down into as the carb sits on the engine. I am not familar with the P/N's for Holley's, however my personal experience with Holleys in particular, and any carb that's been on someone's shelf in general is; it was removed off of whatever vehicle for a reason, and generally that reason is because the carb. is/was malfunctioning. Add to that the fact that the carter/edelbrock carb's are more forgiving of harsh use or environments, and I have just always had good luck/performance out of them instead of the Holley's.

Ashman,

This Vette is in California? How'd you get a big block into your car and still be street/smog legal? I'm asking because I live in San Diego and want to rebuild my '78.

Thanks!!

You guys have helped me alot.
I just hate being in the situation that I'm in. Anyway....again the car runs really nice. I can't wait to get on it good. Aside from the heating issue and eyesores. I can fix the eyesores easily....I wish I was the engine guy. You best believe that I'm getting better..

MLGower,
I carry TX. plates being in the military. That would make it really easy for me. I still ran into the issue of Ca. making a dope deal with the military----having every vehicle smogged no matter what state.

Anyway I know a guy who knows a guy and so on......Let me know if you want to know the guy that I know.

I will hopefully get my carb issue straight soon. Can't wait. I really need a good deal on A/C and ALT brackets......I found some a Zip.
I don't want a chrome engine. I want it more natural, raw looking.

Ashman
