Im 19 years old, and currently drive a 1999 Camaro SS, love it to pieces, but would like to get a Corvette. I dont utilize the two back seats anyways ;). So what the heck! I dont abuse any of my cars, I havent even had my car over 3400 rpms. And problably never will! Havent been pulled over for any things except for a false identification. Im looking for a C5 Corvette , but cant decide on which year, would like to keep the price under 25k if all possible. But also would like the HUD. Also get rid of my string of automatics and plunge for the M6 transmission. What year would best suit my needs?

EDIT: Make that a coupe also.

Keeping the price under 25K will more than likely determine which year you get. You may be able to get a medium to high mileage 97 - 99. They're all good. You can't go wrong. Good luck.
:w :Steer

on theCamaro SS i only have 25k miles on the car, perfect condition, and everything is is stock, so Im hoping it will sell at 18k-ish plus savings should land me around 29k ill have, minus taxes on the Corvette so im hoping around around 25k or so ... and still have some money to back me up.

Guess I could take out a loan ... but im figuring i could manage having a late 90's corvette, they look great no matter what. Indeed, Cant Go Wrong.

Well...

You could probably get a 97-98 for 25k easy but if your looking for a HUD they were only installed on 99s and up for a 99 you might be able to get one for like 27-30k although i have seen a lot of 00 corvettes with HUD and 6 speeds for 30k non including tax and all that junk. I have also seen some 00s for 25k but thats only be cause of milage normally arund 40-45k so the prices are a bit lower. I'm about to buy a 00 vette with 25k miles on it for 30k. You should be able to find a good 99 or 00 with the HUD in it for 25k if you don't mind the extra milage. All you got to do is search around for good deals. Try looking at www.cars.com www.autotrader.com and if you don't mind traveling go look at ebay motors you might find a cheap corvette in some other state you could go pick up. Good Luck to ya bro.

Im thinkin more about the HUD,

to you HUD users: does it get distracting? How often do you use it?

I would rather want a low mileage babied corvette, than a high-mileage HUD corvette

im always skeptical about 97's since the new engine change from the LT* to the LS1 ... so more aiming for a 98 then .....

what are you guy's opinion?

The HUD is a great option; I always have some type of display showing on the windshield. Around town I just have the speedometer showing, then I will add RPM, temp, etc as I increase my driving demands. However I would suggest that you do not let this feature get in the way of making a smart purchase. It is nice to have, but clearly is not a necessity! Good hunting..:v Almost forgot, zero distraction while driving!

HUD is great, I find I use it all the time, with/ MPH, RPM and H20 Temp.

It's easy to view and you keep you eyes on the road.
Tom

99 would be a good choice.

I love the HUD, use it all the time. That's probably the one option I like the most personally, besides the 6-speed. Always the mph/rpm. Usually the oil, though I'll go thru the gas/water periodically.

Deer in the HUD lights

Hey ya'll

I LOVE the HUD on my 2000 Coupe. It's hard to drive other vehicles without it now. The only hitch, is if you live in an older neighborhood with lots of deer, (not that its been a problem this year with all of the rain) and shrubs. I end up turning it off or way down because the contrast of the HUD against the darkness makes it hard to see what's on the sides. Otherwise, its the best option that Chevy ever put on a car and I wouldn't buy a Vette without it.

I thought some '98s had the HUD as an option, or is the HUD just an option??? I am more than likely wrong and confused! :L

Also what about your opinions about ride control?

The HUD is an option on coupes and hardtops, standard in the Z06. I have the HUD and love it! Especially when it reads 140mph on the autobahn in Germany!

When people look at my car they always ask to see the HUD.

I think only a few 98s that were produced real late in the year had HUDs but not many. I'm always looking at corvettes for sales on all kinds of classified auto web sites and stuff. I have seen a 98 with a HUD in it but only 1 that i've seen there might be a few out there but not many. There are a lot of 99s with HUDs in them i prolly cause since it was the first year lots of people got it cause it was cool (still is =P)

'97s and '98s had more teething problems than the later models.

Try and get at least a '99.

I agree 100%, I have a '97 and it has not been a trouble free ride. Only had 55k on it.

That being said, I love my car. I look forward to driving whenever I can think of a reason to.

I had the vette mechanic at the local chevy dealership pretty much tell me that from 97 to 99 he always had at least 1 in a bay, things leveled off around 99-00 and he rarely sees the 00+ models. Unless its in for routine service.

No matter what you will love the car.

99 Vette looks like where i want to be at, would it be worth buying a high mileage corvette and stroking the engine out to 383 and beef up the M6 and the suspension?

It's only worth it if you don't mind having a goofy grin on your face whenever you take it out for a ride. Also be sure to turn up the radio so they don't hear you giggling. I other words it would ROCK!

LOL, i get that way just typing it on the screen. :D ..... But I have a question...... I want the Z06 type body style without the hatch ... is that called a certain thing besides coupe and that?

like this

I think that body style is referred to as FRC, which I *think* stands for Fixed Roof Coupe, as opposed to the regular coupe with the removeable targa style top.

Mick

hmmmn.... targa top would be nice.... but that "FRC" is lookin even NICER... I got plenty of time to make up my mind on what I want...
