I have a 1987 coupe that smokes on start up.
Looking at the service bullitans there is a new seal kit for this issue.
How much will this run me to have the seals replaced.
Thanks Brian,

Valve stem seals

I did them on my 87. Check out prices for Felpro o-rings for the stems and umbrella seals for the stem base. It solved the problem. The o-rings get brittle and break from age and heat. It was an afternoon under the hood and less than the garage or dealer cost if you have the tools. You will need a small compressor and spark plug hole attachment to keep the valves from falling into the cylinders and a valve spring compressor. While mine was apart I replaced the original rocker arms wth Comp Cams Roller tip rockers.

For a mechanic, I'd think they could do it faster than that...for me I think that's about what it took, I did mine over two days. The parts were not bad and I had to buy the tools...again not bad.

If you need to use them we can work out something and I can mail them to you to use.

Thanks for the replies.I checked out the service bullitan and there is a valve stem seal kit p/n 12511890 that addresses this issue.

I think I can get the tools I need.

Thanks Brian,

Lots of guys see that as built in "top end lube" for start up. Although not a source of pride, a drop of oil in the top end at cold start is a good thing..

I like to do it without the tools. You have to get TDC for each cylinder. Once you achieve #1 TDC, the piston is at the top. Valve cannot drop any further. #8, #4, etc, etc.
