Dave, could it be because they also move to a bigger rim as well? I'm going to a 16x7 and should have no problems with obstructions. Most others go to the 17x7s, whose looks I don't like on a C2.

I'm not sure. When I bought my vette it had 15x7's with 215/70/15's on it just standard run of the mill rallies... I know with the 17" I think I can go even wider than 225... Maybe Paul will measure his and let us know what type of fender clearances he has.. Paul have you freed your baby from winter jail yet???? Dave...

Dave,

My 1967 is "under construction" in preparation for the 2005 driving season. Unfortunately I cannot take measurements at this time.

Man I forgot all about that... Dave...

Thanks for the response, Viet Nam Vett has his body off and sent me the dimensions of the tank.

I was thinking of 16s as well. Since I have small flares I can use 8" wide with the standard 4" backspacing. My concern right now is there is only one company I can find that makes a 16" tire in a 27" diameter, . If they stop making it what then?

Tom

Sky65,

I assume you mean 8" wide rims. If so, you can use 235/60/16s or 215/65/16s and be right at 27" diameter. The 235s will get you about 9.25" on the pavement while the 215s will get you about 8.5". Do a Tire Rack search for those sizes and see what you come up with. For my taste 27" diameter looks too "Hot Wheel-ish", I will probaly go with a smaller low to mid 26" diameter like 225/60/16 or 235/55/16.

I am currently running 15X8 ralleys with 4" backspacing 255/60 Dunlops. Your right they are kinda wide but I like it. I also like the 27" diameter. I think they fill the wheel wells better. I also think that is the stock tire diameter and the speedo is more accurate. I am not crazy abaout the low sidewall on the 17s so I was considering the 16s.

I am looking to change my stock wheels/tires to something more dressy on my '65. I am considering the Torque Thrust II's and 215-70 15 or 225-70 15. Will both tires fit without rubbing with the stock suspension and what backspacing do I need to accomplish this?

Thanks,
Al

hi, this whole issue is driving me to drinking (more)..i have a 65 convertible, all stock with ralleys off a 67 on it...i want to go with torq thrust II's also...i bought a set of perfect 15x8's with the bfg radial t/a's that were on a stock 66 with no problems...they are too tight for my 65 and i guess i'm stuck with them...lesson learned...anyone interested? i do have pictures...anyway, i'm debating on what size torq thrusts to get...anyone know what combinations, backspacing, offsets, etc and tire sizes will SAFELY work?...i'm interested in anything from 15 up to 17 inches...pictures would be great...thanks!!!

You may wish to consider the pics/stats that I posted earlier in this thread. If you need more details let me know.

Fredd,
I don't want the same problem you are talking about either. I am going to follow Paul's lead and get the 6" 3 3/8 backspacing with 215 70 15s. I would like a wider profile on the road but I don;'t want any clearance problems and my power stearing is by arm-strong. I was gunna get the all polished TT2, but like the painted/polished combo Paul has. Decisions, decisions!

Al,

Just a minor (very) point of clarification. Those wheels come from the factory with the spokes powder-coated grey. I chose to paint them black (caliper heat paint) to match the rocker panels.

And not to drag the discussion on ad naseum, but there is another factor to consider that is seldom mentioned. I have Dunlop Axiom whitewall tires on my stock ralley wheels. As with the Pirellis in the 215mm width (sidewall at its widest) and 70 aspect ratio. But it is a much narrower tire where the rubber hits the road: actual footprint/tread width. Now when you think about where possible fender rubbing can occur it is in the area of the tread. The widest point of the tire is nowhere near the 'glass.

When the Pirellis were first delivered in February of 2004 this was the first observation I made and gave me some concern until they were installed in May. Where the Dunlops cleared easily, the Pirellis were fatter and tighter. But things worked out. Just to muddy the tire waters a little further....

I have one last question on the wheel topic. Does anyone know the bolt pattern of a C2? Is it a 5-bolt and 5" bolt pattern? I’m about to order TT2s for my 63 and don’t want to have any surprises.
