Hey Guys, What is the best way to remove adhesive residue from my wheels left by "stick-on" wheel weights. My GM dealer does a great job of balancing my tires but does not expend any effort removing the old adhesive and foam residue. The wheels on my C-5 are magnesium so they have a painted finish. What products if any are safe to use. As always thanks for your help.

Adhesive Remover

A lot of folks I know seem to swear by WD-40. Doesn't hurt the paint at all. I've used acetone but not on any painted surfaces so I don't recommend that. GooGone is possibly acetone based I believe as well so be cautious.

Cheers!

You are doubly hosed. The mag wheels I had on my 98 did not tolerate any rough treatment at all. The process will take you a looooooong time, cuz' you can't use anything stronger than Goo Gone or kerosene, and you can't scrape it with anything remotely hard. The mag finish is brittle, pretty soft and painted with an automotive finish. I recommend you do one wheel a day, and don't try to rush the process. :beer

If it is inside the wheel, which is where the weights should be applied, then I would try Mothers polish with 000 steel wool, works for me.

Just use plain ol Mineral Spirits from the hardware store!
Works Great, won't harm paint or plastic!~!!:beer

Thanks guys for the pointers. I'll get started this weekend.

I have to agree with Catbert, Goo-Gone or Kerosene. My wife grew up up in the PA coal country, and her father had a Farm he worked in between digging for Coal. But they always sprayed all the farm equipment, tractor, harvester and whatever with a good coating of Kerosene for the winter.

But 3M makes a product in a spray and it's 3M Release Agent #08971 which will cause the adhesive to slowly curl up after being sprayed and you can wipe it off with a paper towel.

that's what I use on mine
I have 2 sets of the magnesium wheels :w

Adhesive removal !

One of the best & safe scrapers I've ever found is a credit card cut in half. I've used it with WD-40 and it removed all of the yellow speckles after I ran over a fresh painted street line. Took two hours, but it all came off and didn't harm the painted rocker panels. :w
