I am curious to take this poll to get an splattering of when the clutch of a C5 needs replacement. Obviously we all drive differently, but the results may help those of us who still have low miles on our car.

VOTING REQUEST: When you vote, please also leave a message stating your mileage and the type of driving you do. If you feel verbose, you can also explain the symptoms and how long you tolerated them before having it replaced. Furthermore, might as well give us the cost of the repair as well.

Craig

Not yet for me, but I only have 18K miles on it.

I'm curious to know what are the symptoms when the clutch begins to fail?

Tammy

You need another option for those of us who are not beating up the drag strip. 29K and still going strong.

I thought about adding a "not-yet" button, but I really am interested on those who have had to change it. Those who want to add a note stating their not-yet mileage are welcome to post as well. that may be interesting as well.

Craig

My $.02

IMHO (everyone has one right?),
Since all of the responses are clustered in the 70K-110K range, maybe you could break up the range into 4 (70-80, 80-90, 90-100, 100-110) and break up each of those into two sub-groups (normal street & street race/track race).

That would really be revealing.

Dave

We might need more granularity, but as for now, there has only been one response. I added the "Voting Request" section to my original message. hopefully that will give us additional info.

I had a problem with my reverse gear and when they did the repair I was not saticefied. I heard some strange noises when shifting and what not, so the GM service department gave me an extended warrenty on my clutch. So far I have not had to use it. 17000 miles.

My 97 has 93,000 miles and is still going strong but I never slip or ride the clutch.

I have 42,000 plus on mine with only 1 mile of drag racing. It is still going strong.

However, I have done some autocrossing but only up-shifted.

Sticking pedal issue has been a *****.

I just installed a C6 Z06 LS7 clutch, pp and ls2 flywheel...

Stayed with a new LS6 slave and master...

Hopefully the sticking clutch pedal issue doesn't return...

When and if you replace....I can not recommend ls6 clutch and flywheel...(been there done that) sticking pedals a pain in the butt...

JoeMackin,

What type of reverse gear trouble did you have? I too have had trouble getting into reverse a few times. The other day It popped out of first into neutral. I thought I was in first all the way. Strange since I only have 12.5K miles.

Craig

JBsC5,

Stick down? Stick up? I am not sure what you mean by sticking? Do you mean that it remained engaged?

Craig

It would not go into reverse. When you thought you finally had it in gear it would sometimes just grind.

A FRIEND OF MINE HAD A 02 Z06 WITH 50,000 MILES ON IT,HE TOOK IT 2 THE TRACK A FEW TIMES A YEAR AND SAID IT WAS TOAST WHEN IT CAME OUT...NOW HE WORKED FOR GM SO HE GOT A DEAL ON THE CLUTCH JOB--IM IN THE MARKET FOR A LATE MODEL 6 SPEED BUT I DONT WANT TO GET STUCK WITH A CLUTCH REPAIR BILL---WHAT IS THE AVERAGE PRICE FOR CLUTCH JOB,SOUP TO NUTS--NO SHORT CUTS

I occassionaly have a problem getting it into reverse, I think its in but then it grinds. I find if I pay close attention I can feel its gonna grind and then I just rev the engine a little and and let the car roll a bit and then it goes in. Othern then that no problems. I bought the car used at around 30k and I drive aggressively but I've never taken it to the track for dragging or racing or anything like that. Its at 63k now.

21k and all is well.

Remo-
Did LPE do anything with your clutch?

Negative - they said it looked good. The thing that really kills those clutches is drag racing (peddling it out of the hole) and sitting at stop lights with it on the floor. On the other hand, if I owned this car 30 years ago I would have been through several clutches by now. Funny how that works.

I've got about 150 passes at the strip and 30,000 miles on mine with no problems yet.

I'm looking at a new SPEC clutch to install ASAP. Mine was slipping on the dyno today and still made over SAE +440rwhp lol! Yup, it is time for a new one. 43K miles.
