With General Motors’ announcement to close manufacturing operations in Australia by 2017, the curtain is about to fall on the country’s domestic auto manufacturing for good. However, the home-built models will go out with a major bang. Holden Specialty Vehicles (HSV) has announced it will build a limited-edition LSA-powered ute model named the GTS Maloo. For those of you unfamiliar with Down Under lingo, the closest equivalent the U.S. has seen to a “ute” was the Chevrolet El Camino and Ford Ranchero car-based pickups we saw from the late ‘50s to late ’70s.
That said, no El Camino, even the revered SS models, can compete with the GTS Maloo’s thundering 577 hp and 546 lb-ft put out by its supercharged 6.2L LSA V-8 engine. If that engine code sounds familiar, that’s because it’s been well proven in the Cadillac CTS-V and Camaro ZL1.
