OK, I may not be the smartest guy here, so can anyone tell which style water pump is on my 78 SB. The water pump went up and as the bearing came apart the output shaft fell off to the side. This bent the water pump pulley. I now have to get another. But I'm not sure which to buy. One for short or long water pump. HELP!!!!!!!!

To the best of my knowledge, it would be the short one. Do yourself a favor, go to G.M. or NAPA and buy a new pump,NOT A REBUILT you will be much happier!!!!:)

I put a rebuilt on for now. I'm builting a new motor to go in either this winter or in the spring; just depends on when I get it completed. I just moved and the new garage needs to be rewired, so things are just on hold for awhile.

Since 1971 to 82, all small block 350`s use the long pump. 1970 and earlier use`s the short pump.

... and has the HD 3/4 shaft, not the more common 5/8 shaft. If the old one is original - keep it despite it's failure - may be of value to a future owner if it's not of value to you.

The small block Chevrolet engine used one of 3 water pumps over the years. They are referred to as short, Corvette, and long. The short and long pumps used a 5/8th inch diameter pilot shaft at the fan attachment. The Corvette pump used a ¾ inch diameter pilot shaft to mate to the fan. Measuring from the mating surface to the block to the point where the fan attaches the pumps measure;

Short – 5 5/8ths

Corvette – 5 13/16ths

Long – 6 15/16ths

The GM part number for an aluminum high volume Corvette pump is part number 14011012. They are still available from GM.

OK, Now I know I have the 3/4 diameter nose and the 5 13/16 length. Now I need to find a replacement water pump pulley. From I read here I can not use either the long or short pump pulleys to replace my damaged one.

SO, I guess I'm looking for a SB two groove water pump pulley off a Corvette. I was hoping I could just pick up one of those alum. one off the net. Guess not. Now, if that is true does anyone have one they can spare?

I found this pic posted by bossvette regarding long and short normal smallblock water pumps, anyone have a picture of a vette one? Id like to see all three side by side if possible.

THanks, Jeremy
