I started hearing a loud High pitched squeel seemingly coming from inside the hatch while driving slow.

It sounds like it is right in the center of the back of the car, god I pray it is not the rear end diff, maybe fuel pump.

Anybody ever hear this.

It seems to go away after driving for a minute or two.

Help

Most of the time, a diff will whine constantly. If it goes away within minutes, I would check the brakes? How about if you lightly touch the brakes going slow? Does the noise return?

Some noice like it happened to me after I changed the ring and pinion. It just went away when I added the proper GM limited slip additive.

Of course you should check all the bolts and nuts down there!

Thanks guys but it sounds like it is in the cabin or very close.

Thats why I thought of Fuel pump.

Man, it's tough enough to diagnose problems when talking to the person face-to-face and the vehicle at hand, trying to do this online is going to be tough.

You say it's a "squeel", and not a "growl" or a "whine"? About the only thing I can think of that would emit a "squeeling" noise would be an improperly lubed or worn bearing. The differential would give you more of a growling or whining sound.

When you hear this noise, is the vehicle cold, or does it happen each and every time you drive the vehicle? When you first turn the key to the "ON" position, the digital cluster goes through a self-check of all of its lights. Does the ABS light come on briefly when you first turn the key? If the squeel happens every time you drive the vehicle, do you get any ABS indicator light in the first few minutes? (It may even happen when you first start moving.) I am just trying to eliminate the ABS as the cause of your squeel.

Drive the car next to a long wall. Roll the driver's window down and see if it's more pronounced on the driver's side? Now turn around and roll down the passenger window. Which side do you hear is louder? If it's in the center still, then you might have something going in the rear end rather than and outer side bank (wheel assembly(s)?

If it is a manual trans it could be the throw out bearing. just before they fail they start making a squealing noise when you first start the car. Then it will go away after a few minutes. After awhile it becomes continuous when ever the clutch is engaged. Then it goes out completely. The other thing it might be is the input shaft bearing in the trans. Have you checked to be sure your trans is full of oil? and the correct kind of oil? Just some things to look at. I am not an expert, just have had this experience in the past on other vehicles.

WOW, when you ask for help in here everybody jumps right in. I love it.

Here's the latest, this morning I got in started the car, nothing out of the ordinary, no SES light sflashing, drove down the street and squeel 2-3 times 10-20 seconds apart. Got on the highway doing about 70mph and squeel same sound no faster exactly the same.

wondering about the ABS, or fuel pump, it sure sounds like it is coming from the hatch mechanism, but that could just be the way things sound back there.

The squeel sounds like a nails on chalkboard sound, maybe a mount or something.

Well, I guess you have to yank a back wheel, and check brake pad thickness? That squeal might be the safety tang that warns you to change the pads. You have to start somewhere?..........;shrug

try it with the radio off. if the sound goes away....you found it.

often the power antenna has a poor ground and it will backfeed a faint high pitched scratchy squeel for about 20-30 seconds, and sometimes constant. if you get it with the radio off....then move on to the next likely suspect.
