I have a 95 that has never given me a problem until now. I shut the car off and it will not crank and sometimes the I/P will not light up. I can not get my scanner to link and I checked the voltage at the port (it is 12.47). I checked fuses and did not find any bad. Almost acts like an old VATS problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have good voltage at the starter and believe it to be the ignition switch. I will replace it and go from there.

I had new keys made and replaced the switch and it starts now! Thank you to everyone who submitted solutions.

Hey BRUCE ..WELCOME. i would start at the beginning of the system.check battery with a load tester.then cables from the battery, check them going to ground ,and the starter, have some one try and start car with a volt meter on the starter.while keying the ignition check the small wire on the starter for voltage...in other words when you turn the key voltage is sent to the little wire on starter.this closes /activates the solinoid( i was taught it is really a magnetic switch) .if enough voltage is there you should be good to go. this is not counting things like neutral switchs .not familar with 93..vats or no vats. good luck

Check the contacts where the pellet on the key fit in the ignition switch, sometimes they cause vats problems. Are you getting voltage at the starter? One other thing I can think of right now would be the neutral switch, but that only applies to auto's.

On a standard trans car it could be the clutch safety switch.

On the last car the switch went bad, it's almost an integral part of the shifter. When I did the trans I put in a new shifter. Also if any of the cables are mis-adjusted the switch won't make contact. There is one for the trans and one for the steering lock. There was a Tech Bulletin about the routing of the BU/NSS wiring harness routing ... about chaffing near the center IP cluster, but I think it applied to earlier models. If its an auto try pressing the shift lock button and rocking the lever as you try to start.

Glenn, That conntector plugs into the ZF tranny, correct?

There is one that is activated by the clutch pedal near the top.Might be intrigated with the brake light switch.

Thanks for the help. I have good voltage at the starter. I have noticed the ignition switch is slopy and I am going to replace it. Thanks again.

Hi There,
I believe you are right and I will replace the switch and go from there. Thanks for the help.

Another thing to consider, if your ignition switch doesn't turn out to be the problem, is the starter relay behind the DIC. At least that ended up being the problem on my 88.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help. I replaced the switch and it took care of the problem. I also had new keys made.

Good to hear.

This place is great for bouncing ideas / troubleshooting help. Lots of really knowledgeable folks round here.

BTW welcome to :CAC
