GM Unveils New Transmission

General Motors has announced that it has developed a new 5-speed automatic transmission, according to the Automotive NewsWire. Called the Hydra-Matic 5, it is said to be the first transmission to incorporate three performance features found individually on many high-performance vehicles but not in one package.
GM calls one feature DSC for Driver Shift Control, which allows the driver to switch from a fully automatic mode to a clutchless five-speed manual transmission by using a shift lever. A control module prevents gear changes if engine revs are too high.
Another feature is called PAL, for Performance Algorithm Liftfoot, which prevents upshifts while maintaining engine braking following continuous performance driving. A driver-selectable TCM (transmission control module) is said to monitor driver behavior to determine if PAL should be invoked.
Finally, there's PAS (Performance Algorithm Shifting), which, like PAL, monitors the driver's behavior and modifies automatic gear selection during closed throttle rapid acceleration and performs synchronous matched shifts at ideal performance engine speeds.
The new transmission will initially appear in the 2004 Cadillac XLR and SRX equipped with a new Northstar 4.6 liter V-8.
