Hello, I have a 1973 Corvette. Just had the water pump rebuilt and had replaced the dashboard wiper switch which was broken. When the ignition switch is turned on, the wipers also start with the wiper switch in the off position. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Are you saying you had the engine water pump rebuilt or the wiper washer pump?

There is a "park" switch built into the wiper motor that could have failed. Easily replaceable is the good news, it's called a "park switch" in GM's parts catalogs. I don't know if it's an aftermarket (NAPA, AutoZone) item.

Wiper Motor Issue

Thanks for your response. I will look into it. I had sent the wiper motor and water pump to a restoration company in Maryland. They rebuilt the wiper pump and indicated no need to rebuild the wiper motor because it was in great shape. All connectors on the components and wiring are in great shape. I just can;t figure out why as soon as i turn on the ignition switch, the wiper motor starts to operate. Moving the wiper switch between lo and high speed works perfectly, only it wont shut off.

Like Tim said the park switch is not working. It's a plastic gear on the motor shaft....it spreads to contacts apart so it has time to park the wipers.......It their so if you turn off the switch and the blades are at the top of the stroke the blades have electrical contact till they get down to park position...... the gear is timed to open the contacts at the bottom of the stroke.:thumb

Wiper Motor

I replaced the "New" wiper switch installed in the dash with another "New" switch and the problem was solved. Thanks for all your input. Now I have to solve another issue where my rebuilt wiper pump does not pump water. The piston is operating and I need to check some tube connections.

thanks for the input regarding the wiper motor issue.

Hi again MrAgent007,
To prime the pump just take a mouth full of fresh water and attach a hose to the inlet feed and blow in while the pump is on.
You might want to first make sure that the hoses from the washer tank and the hoses to the wipers are clear.
Regards,
Pete.

Wiper Motor Issue

Thanks for your input. The wiper motor continued to run because I had installed a "New" bad wiper switch. I had purchased a new switch, installed it and the problem was solved. I honestly did not think that a new switch could go bad therefore initially never considering this to be the problem. Thanks again for all the input and I now will now move on to addressing the wiper pump issue.
