I'm searching for a new Plug & Wire Setup for my 69 (427, 11:1 compression with Aluminum Heads). I have upgraded the points to the Pertronix Electronic Ignition (inside original distributor setup). The wires on the car are original, or atleast are dated correctly. I will hold on to these wires but am looking to upgrade performance in the mean time. I have no idea of their age or condition.

I'm looking for suggestions. So far, I've had the Nology Hotwire and Silverstone Plugs in mind....but they cost $$$. In ya'lls opinion, is there any advantice to the capacitor style plugs? I did run across a warning against the Nology Hotwires. Nology Hotwire Warning

What's the general opinion here? Thanks.

Accel and Moroso are both good choices, 8mm spiral wound are not a lot of bucks. AC standard plugs do a great job, platinum are not worth the extra money and do nothing for performance IMHO.

Anthony,

Did you swap the coil for a higher voltage model when you installed the Ignitor? If so, go with a much heavier wire, say 8mm or bigger. I'll be swapping mine out soon as well. I'm sure others will recommend brands and I'll be watching this thread myself for those recommendation.

I just did mine about 2 weeks ago, installed accel high perf wires as the originals werent cutting it anymore, the accels i dropped in were 8.8 mm and claim to withstand 500 F.

The only real issue I had with them were the wires for Cylinder 1 and 2 were abour 5" to long (hide them under the cover) and Cylinder 7 and 8 seemed to be about 1" short (they are snug against the manifold shielding).

When the headers and side pipes arrive I will have to buy another set and swap off the long and shorts.

Still looking for a good plug probably go with ACD's rapid fires

Bill

Thanks for the info.

Eric, yeah I did upgrade the coil as well. It's the 40,000 Volt Oil Filled from Pertronix.

The guy "SALESMAN" from Nology told me that the oil filled coil didn't ramp up fast enough for the high performance application that the wires are used for. In other words, if I went with his wires, the coil (that I just bought) would now be the weak link in the chain. By the way their coil is $107, Wires $326, Plugs about $10 each.:crazy

I'd like to hear some more opinions on that. There are a lot of people, myself included, using those Flamethrower 40k coils with no problem whatsoever and they don't cost $100+. Pertronix even markets a hi-po kit including their Flamethrower coil, the Ignitor, and their wires. Hmmm, I don't think they'd package it like that to ruin their good name.

Alright all you ignition gurus, chime on in!

No-Nology

Anthony:
I follow motor racing pretty closely and am personally involved at the shop & pit levels. While I'm sure there are exceptions, I don't know of a single successful team or OEM that chooses to use the Nology stuff. Even if it were widely accepted sp wire technology (it ain't), I'd want more assurance that they walked the talk of customer service. Forget Nology stuff ... the hype smells all too familiar.

As others have said, get a good set of 8 to 9 mm wires with a metal spiral-core/heli-core conductor. Accel, Moroso, MSD, Taylor are the ticket ... you can do these for $35 - $75/set. If I recall, Pertronix also offers a spiral-core wire that mimics the aesthetics of OEM.

If I recall, coils are date coded too ... you might wanna hang on to the old one. Dunno how/where you mounted the Pertronix Flamethrower, but oil-filled canister coils should be mounted vertically to prevent overheating-failure.

Plugs ... like oil ... everyone has opinion. Good, clean, fresh AC/Autolite/Bosch/Champion will be fine.

Finally, if you really wanna put a Capacitive Discharge wallop in your ignition ... the tried & true MSD 6 or Crane Hi-6 boxes do a super job for $150 - $300 ... and they'll work great WITH your Pertronix Ignitor & Flamethrower. However, I think simply adding good wires & plugs to your present setup will be all you'd ever need.

$300 for a set of plug wires? Nothing but hype and ripoff - hard to believe people fall for that stuff. Unless you're running a blown fueler with a pair of $8,000 MSD or Mallory fueler magnetos, a good set of 8mm heli-core wires and ordinary plugs of the correct heat range will work just fine. Platinums, Rapid-Fires, Split-Fires, and all the other "miracle" plugs are pure hype too. Plugs and wires don't make horsepower - they just light the fire, and when it's lit, it's lit.

That's pretty much what I figured.....thougtht I'd throw the question out there. Thanks for all the responses. Chris used the Taylor 10.4mm in his beast. Like he said, there's no reason you need something that big except that they look cool. I'm leaning that way.

Accel Super Coil

While we are on this subject,I would like your input on this.Would my stock 81 benefit by installing one of those Accel HEI Super Coils?Or,should i save my money?

Thanks Guys............ Dave
