The motor is on it's way and the trans is being rebuilt. I'm cleaning up the engine bay and have several questions. The first one is about the wiring harness. I'm removing everything from the engine bay so I can clean it an put a fresh coat of black in the whole bay.
As I began clearing off the firewall I began tracing the wiring harness. Over the years the previous owner (or a service tech) did some creative wire splicing. The AC and the Wiper Door limit switch were spliced into a hot wire going to the relay under the driver side front quarter panel. The Alternator had one wire cut and taped off and a new wire spliced into the plug and run to the wiper motor. I'm not sure why either of these things was done but they make me nervous about the current harness. In addition there is one spot that was melted on the AC harness and the wires to the starter are all gummed up with oil from a leaky valve cover and rear main seal.
Based on these problems I've decided to replace at least the engine and front light harnesses. I've marked all the connectors and pulled the engine harness away from the firewall. My question is how do you remove the harness from where it connects to the firewall. It looks like a plug but I'm not sure if it just pulls out or if there is something else to disconnect. There is one bolt in the middle of the connector where both harnesses meet the firewall. Does this have to be removed or does it just hold the fuse box to the firewall on the inside?
Any help would be great. The assembly manual doesn't show anything.
I've got a few more questions that I'll post as separate threads.
