The motor is on it's way and the trans is being rebuilt. I'm cleaning up the engine bay and have several questions. The first one is about the wiring harness. I'm removing everything from the engine bay so I can clean it an put a fresh coat of black in the whole bay.

As I began clearing off the firewall I began tracing the wiring harness. Over the years the previous owner (or a service tech) did some creative wire splicing. The AC and the Wiper Door limit switch were spliced into a hot wire going to the relay under the driver side front quarter panel. The Alternator had one wire cut and taped off and a new wire spliced into the plug and run to the wiper motor. I'm not sure why either of these things was done but they make me nervous about the current harness. In addition there is one spot that was melted on the AC harness and the wires to the starter are all gummed up with oil from a leaky valve cover and rear main seal.

Based on these problems I've decided to replace at least the engine and front light harnesses. I've marked all the connectors and pulled the engine harness away from the firewall. My question is how do you remove the harness from where it connects to the firewall. It looks like a plug but I'm not sure if it just pulls out or if there is something else to disconnect. There is one bolt in the middle of the connector where both harnesses meet the firewall. Does this have to be removed or does it just hold the fuse box to the firewall on the inside?

Any help would be great. The assembly manual doesn't show anything.

I've got a few more questions that I'll post as separate threads.

The plug is split into 2 parts...the front light harness and then the engine bay harness. there is a 7/16" bolt in the center....unscrew the bolt and then pull them out.....

If you need to replace the harness I got all mine from M&H electric fabricators....excellent product...color match.....etc

Waterboy,

Thanks. I saw the bolt but didn't want to start disconnecting or pulling randomly. It appears simple enough. I'll check out M&H. I saw Lectric Limited (sp?) too. Any thoughts on both vendors?

I bought a complete wire harness (minus turn signal switch harness which they dont make) for my 68 from Lectric Limited. In my opinion, they are great to deal with and their tech support is top notch. Anything I've thrown at them, they've been able to answer.

Ive heard Lectrci Ltd is as good as M&H never bought anything from them always from M&H but have seen their harnesses and what do ya know they all look the same....:D

Jon,
I checked my records, bought the engine harness and frt lites/gen harness from Last Detail, 124. and 195. respectively a few years ago. They had to be M & H products as I have the sticker on my tool box.
Not sure what they are going for today.
I think the dash has to come out since the fiber optics run to the little telltale panel.

Don,

You're a stealthy and funny guy :D. Looks like I cannot live without a diagram like what you have. I've got a 71 convertible. I've never done Paypal. What other payment options do you have?

Just got the Wiring Diagram today. I was out of town and it was waiting for me when I got home. VERY VERY nice. The print is huge and I can actually read it. The color coded wiring is going to be a life saver and the vacuum hose layout will save a bunch of time.

Thank you very much Don. Now if you just had a "how to" for for my digital multi meter you'd be teaching an old dog new tricks. I'm still stuck in the old test light days. For me the line is either hot or it's not. :L

Anyone interested in Don's wiring diagrams will not be disappointed.
