Can anyone tell me what the difference is between a automatic and a 4 speeds engine block on a '71 besides CJK and CJL:confused

thanks

Wes,
Are you asking if there is a difference in the engine block with a manual and automatic transmission? If so, I would say there is none. The three letter stamping is done at the assembly line long after the block has been cast.

Thanks Craig, I didn't think there was but just asking.

The suffix stamp identifies the "engine assembly" as shipped from the engine plant, not just the block, and the "engine assembly" in your example only differs in that the 4-speed combination includes the flywheel, clutch, bellhousing and clutch fork, and the otherwise identical automatic engine only has a flexplate on it. The engine itself is identical from the rear face of the block forward between the two applications, but from there rearward the "engine assembly as shipped" is different due to what's bolted onto it.
