help my car is not running right. starts cold and runs fine on choke and fast idle but then it comes off fast idle and runs bad. restart it and it cranks hard like out of time. so I check time and its off the charts cant even get it close.now with another computer I get a temp sensor code. flash pause flash five times and repeats. so I replaced it and no change. whats going on it seems like a timing issue but new ecm temp sensor, ignition moduleand still no way to get close to correct timing. can something be wrong with my distributor.

Make sure the balancer outer ring has not slipped which would show timing is off. Best way know to do this is to remove one of the valve covers and with the distributor cap off, pick a cylinder and rotate the engine and watch the valves and rotor position. When both valves are closed on the selected cylinder, the rotor should be just about aligned where the spark plug terminal on the cap would be.

I assume timing is checked with the computer 4 pin connector unplugged...right?

Does the engine run with the computer unplugged?
Does the timing advance with the computer unplugged?

Have you checked the operation of the idle mixture solenoid?
Checked for vacuum leaks?

Keep after it. The CCC system is not very complex.

hi lanny iv tried all that is mentioned and it was perfect then it just went off. the time it definitely going off. if the balancer slipped after the time was set it would still run ok right? just would show it was off with the light even though it is correct. but it really is out of time. upon start cold it fires right up then it runs terrible after the fast idle is disengagued. then it hard cranking and timing problems.

did you unplug the single brown wire???when you timed it????
It sound like its out of time.

I unplugged the 4 wire connector. what does the single brown wire have to do with it? where?

If you follow the instructions on how to time it,on the label under the hood,it tells you what to do to set the timing....there should be a label affixed to the under side of the hood it gives you the year, engine, federal data at the time,ROMs for idling, and how to set the timing...IF you don't have one I'll take a picture of mine and post it when I get home later today.

what brown single wire are you talking about. only single brown wire is an oil pressure sensor. yes I have emissions sticker. I was thinking it was an electrical problem. maybe someone else had a similer situation and they could help me pinpoint it. I timed it 6 months ago and its been fine then just started acting up.

Check all your plugs, plug wires, cap, rotor make sure they aren't crossed, rubbed through,in the cap all the way,
Cap is seated properly. all the plug wires are on the plugs all the way...

bill, you sound just like the book. I tested the pickup coil yesterday and it failed. so I ordered a new one brought it home to discover the magnet was for a 6 cylinder. now I cant return it 70 dollars! im going to swap the six magnet for my old one and see if it functions or im gonna have to eat the 70 dollars and buy another one. this time ill take it apart in store to verify its an 8 cylinder magnet. ill let you know later. thanks for the replies.
