X pipe placement

After doing some research on x pipe placement I am somewhat confused. I have read info that says to place the x pipe as far forward as possible while others say to place it as far rearward as possible. I am sure that placement is going to have some kind of effect on how it works so could/would anyone out there be willing to share their opinion/advise/experience on this subject? Thanks!

The MagnaFlow system has the xpipe right behind the cats or header collectors.

Well in the case of a C4, the car dictates where the x pipe will go. Theres just no other place to put it except the middle of the system.
