I am installing xm radio in my vette and I'm wondering if anybody has a diragram of the stock gm radio jack harness. I need to locate a constant hot, switched hot and a ground point. Also, does anyone have any suggestions on antenna mounting location, that will not detract from the looks of the car?

Note, I am installing the Pioneer Gex-fm903xm radio

Thanks

What's up Carson?
I installed the digital system in my Vette. I placed the XM900 unit under the passenger seat since it isn't motorized and used the bolt that holds down the seat as my ground point. I used the "radio" fuse in the fuse box for my constant hot, and the antenna is mounted on the dash in the far right corner next to the "A-pillar". It hardly ever gets notice by the passenger and I get great reception through the fiberglass body.

Good luck.

xm radio

I finally got the unit installed. I custom made an antenna mount inside the rear bumper, (8x16 metal plate). I finally read the manuel and found the accessory power source in the passenger foot well. Next I disconnected the cd change, added an adaptor from P.I.E. electronic and an adaptor from pioneer. now the xm radio is a direct connection to my aux button on the factory radio, verses fm modulation. I will loose the cd changer, but I'm guessing I won't need it.

Cool. Glad to see you got her together.
I hardly ever listen to regular radio or CDs anymore. I hear too much of what I like without the commercials to go back. And I never have to change CDs.
I love my XM.

Carson, did you have to do any customization to the center console where the radio is installed? Overall, how did the installation go?

I removed the ashtray and and custom fitted a black piece of plastic over the ashtray and cigarette liter using the old ashtray as a template. Next i removed the tiny black tab on the back side of the main ashtray door so that it would not hit the display modual. I can now close the main ashtray door and completely hide the display. Except for removing the black tab it is completely reversible. If anybody is interested, I can post a photo.

Carson,

If you could post a photo, that would be cool. Thanks.

What kind of adapter is needed to eliminate the FM modulator?

I have a Pioneer and would love to use AUX instead of FM...

I will have the photos later to day sorry. Also the parts that eleminate the fm mod are as follows: PIE PART # GM10-AUX. To use this part you must disconnect the 12 disc changer in the trunk. Plug the gm10 -aux into the factory plug. Now you basically have a plug with 2 rca jacks which you can plug any aux source into. Note: the cd changes is no longer functional. Next get a pioneer xm satellite radio interface ip bus to rca adapter. Plug in and you are ready to go. When you push the aux button on the dash radio the xm radio will read a cd1 title 1.

items can be purchased on line at www.logjamelectronics.com

I will say that I am having a problem with the gm10-aux right now. I'm using the fm mod until a new part arrives.

I guess that is subjective. My guess is that the 2003 factory system is better because all the controls are built right into the factory radio. If there is a knock on the pioneer is the fact that you must scroll thru all 100 chanels. Sound wise they are probally the same. Hope this helps.

I don't know it is possible to install a factory xm radio into an older c5l. the antenna could be a big problem.

udate on xm radio install

I finally got the direct connection to the stock radio, and got rid of the fm modulator. The sound quality is greatly improved. worth the extra $100

Villain, I have recently purchased a 2002 coupe and am a XM fan. You mentioned that you located the antenna on the passenger side dash. Do you get good reception there? What type antenna do you use? Any suggestions will go a long way.

Hello GKrenn,
Yes, I do have the antenna located on my passenger side dash. I am using the Terk II antenna and it is right in the corner partially hidden by the A-pillar. The reception is very good. I only lose signal where everyone else would lose it (tunnels, some underpasses). Basically whenever you can't see the sky for an extended period there will be dropout.
As far as the antenna, there are plenty of smaller more powerful antenna that come with the newer systems. I have a first generation Pioneer so the antenna is huge compared to the newer Oreo sized antenna. But even my antenna was small in comparison to the others out at the time. It's about the size of a computer mouse.

Did you get a chance to take a picture of the finished install? I would love to see it.
