Your least Favorite Part about the 81

Mike,

Do you happen to have an MSD Box connected to it? If the small red wire is not connected to a "switched" source, then it will tend to drain the battery. I believe that the light brown wire that connects to the distributor is the switch-connected wire in an L81 set-up.

Also, I have read about the courtesy light causing these issues here in the CAC site. Do a search under "battery drain".

I do not have an MSD box, every thing is original EXCEPT: I replaced the motor with a new GM crate (stock) and unplugged the distributor computer wires since I added a vacuum dist. and added an 80 model carb. The computer is still powered as I only unplugged it from the distributor, if that makes sense. Keep asking if / how to remove the power from the computer and if that is the source of the drain on the battery.
The courtesy lights were a problem with batt drain, but that has been repaired. Whatever the drain is, it isn't much since it takes more than 4 weeks to pull it down.
Thanks for any help you can send . Mike J.

Janine..... your vent tube may be clogged. It should never do that. When mine clicks off I can barely get a shot glass more of gas in the tank.

I hate when at the pumps and I fill the gas tank up and it clicks done!
I look in the hole, the tank and I can see that I have more to fill so I eyeball it until it hits another 5 gallons. whats up with that?

C3L81...... I have a 82CE rear hatch window in my '81 and it's more of a conversation piece than an enhancement. You have to be VERY careful about leaning in to get/put something if you have any pants with a belt buckle, dangling keys, exposed zipper...... (you get the idea). And after pulling the release cord for 25 years it's now stretched out and difficult to open easily. And replacement parts??? Foo-get about it.

The thing I dislike the most about my '81: changing out a flat tire using our special "spare in the bucket" tire, finding all the jack pieces and actually getting the thing up in the air........ well, let's just say it's an event you won't soon forget any time soon.

Hahaha that's a very good one Nut!!! I already forgot about that one

@mike, try pointing out where the leakage is. Just put a amp's meter in the sockets of one fuse, just go from fuse to fuse. When the meter shows there is a current flowing you have the one. (try to close the doors or else the courtesy lights stay on :) )

Thanks Bob, I will have it checked out, that makes sense to me. :w

I agree, more HP. There's nothing worse than your friends teasing you about their Minivan having more HP than your Vette!
