Here's a hypothetical question from a fairly new Z06 owner:

When would you use the Competitive Driving Mode other than to lay a patch or run on a track? In other words, suppose you were at a light against a high caliber car (i.e. 911 Turbo, Cobra, Viper), should I go into Competitive Driving Mode? What would be the optimal RPM to launch the vehicle the fastest off the line? Assume Smokey is not around and there's at least one mile to the next light. Excellent road condition and weather conditions are also prime: sunny and dry. No passenger either!

I've used it before to spin the wheels to prevent going sideways but I haven't had to use it for a street light race, yet ;), if you know what I mean, LOL. I just want to make sure I'm prepared!!!

Thanks in advance. Hope to meet some of you in Bowling Green/ Nashville in June! :beer

Join a Corvette club and have fun doing some drag racing, road course or autocross. Don't risk playing in traffic. One of the best reasons for having a Corvette is that it still looks cool even when you drive slowly and carefully.

Thanks for the advice BlueCoupe. I have joined a local club and hopefully will learn a lot from the experienced guys.

To be honest with you, I sometimes enjoy driving her slow and let everyone stare. They know the power is there and when they pass me they think I'm old but to their surprise, I look like 25 (I'm 32). I'm also a daddy so I wouldn't take high risks. It's just not worth it.

If the roads are dry...I always put it in comp mode. Try accelerating hard (WOT) and when you shift gears, you'll notice that the car "dies" a little bit when you let the clutch out. Hmmmm...could it be the traction control trying to contain your spinning wheels? I think so.

;) Nope.... competitive mode allows the rear tires to spin and break lose without activating ABS/brakes... ie. traction control. If your starting to "spin" then the computer steps in to help correct the yaw rate etc!

In competitive mode or "off" Launch between 2200 / 2400 RPM. This yields a small amount of hop but hooks up pretty well and doesn't bog. Nail the gas as soon as you hook up.

playing in traffic; join a club

Great advice! Once I drove in 'off street' competition :nono as a young lad, I realized how many variables exist which can truly hurt someone, on public roads. I saw how crazy it is to drive too aggressively in public.

My experience had a lot to do with sending my 20-something to a HiPerf school with his 540i; to learn the car's limits in a safe environ, plus learn what a safe environ IS.

Now, I try to set a good example of what Corvette owners are, by being extra courteous and by not showing off. After all, I have to prove nothiong to anyone. My car and I can deliver a butt-whomping at will, and I feel better about that secure knowledge than in pounding :Buttslap some half-baked rust/rice wagon into the asphalt.

You want some of this? Come get it. Bring cash a to a safe place and prepare to PAY. :)

I have a question..

If your gunning it from a light in "Competition mode" and its sets off the active handling message on the dash...

Is it just because the cars going a little sideways?
