HI there,
Well, I dont understand the number question.
However, your 01 Z was 385 horse. 02 is 405 horse.
03 was 405 as wil be 04.

Thanks ! The numbers I am looking for are the engine block and cylinder head casting numbers. Have a chance to buy a Z engine and need to identify and make sure it is a Z engine. Any other ways to tell or what year it is ? Thanks

Hi there,
Sure there is, as if you look for the stamping on the drivers side of the block, you will see a VIN stamped into the block.
The engine code will be S.

I still don't know . . .

Gentelmen!!

Last year I was on here whining about the engine in my 2001 Z06. It went in for the ring job and the dealership told me they ended up having to change the engine, due to scuffing in no. 5 cylinder. I never visited the shop during that time, stupid me. Now I've got people telling me, thru the grapevine, that they never really changed the engine. I am still getting the burnt oil smell in the engine compartment.

Is ther any way I can tell if the engine was changed?

Where is the serial number on the engine?

Can I get it traced if I find it?

It did stop using oil though. But they charged GM almost $9000.00 for the supposed engine swap.

Please help!!

Mark

HI there,
You can take a look at the attached, this is where you will find the number stamps for your VIN.
If your VIN is not stamped in these 2 locations, then you have a replacement engine.

Re: Numbers Graphic

C4C5,

Well I could just see the vertical area as shown on the graphic, it was smooth and shiny. There was no putting an eyeball on the slanted one behind the head though. I managed to force my hand behind the head, that surface was also smooth. So it must be a replacement engine.

Does this mean I'm no longer a "numbers matching" car? Not a biggie to me, just curious.

The back edge of the head had the number 243 cast into it, what's that mean?

What's the chance this is an 02 engine? Others have told me that it's probably an exact replacement made by Goodwrench, so it would still be 385hp with the old cam. The stock number on the invoice is 88894057 and the description is ENGYLS6GW with a cost of $6697.00

Thanks Again!

VetteMan,
As far as numbers matching, you are correct about not being matching. However, if you keep the paperwork with the car that states why it was replaced it shouldn't present you with much problem when you try to sell since it was a warranty replacement.

You all forgot the 199 Z06's from 1963! (VBG)

FYI - just getting caught up with the Forum after being in Bowling Green/Nashville and places in between there and Baltimore - played golf all the way home, which only took me 2 weeks!
