The Continental Extreme Contact DW is an excellent tire for your needs. Relatively inexpensive compared to some, better in most ways than others. This is THE rain tire of choice for many SCCA Solo 2 or auto-x participants. They are a quiet tire, tread wear is 340. Car and Driver did a big tire test last year and in 09. You might want to check those out, as well as, tirerack.com. Lots of reviews and tests.

Even the Kumho Escta SPT's are a decent street performance tire. I do NOT like them at all for auto-x, for street use they are fine.
Quiet, good wet weather qualities, good dry traction, no complaints other than they wear out faster than I would like. That might be a driving style thing however.

To make a useful recommendation, you need to offer some additional information.

First, tell us your most important quality in a tire
1) Cost?
2) Treadlife?
3) Dry traction performance?
4) Noise?

Second, when you say "summer tire performance" are you talking about a street/track tire or just a street tire to be used mainly in good weather?

Third, is your 88 a coupe or a convertible? If it's a coupe, is it a Z51?

This is what I have on my '96 and I think they are a good tire. They need to warm up for a few miles to loose the jitters, but once warm they are smooth and true. I will buy them again.
