Welcome to the Corvette Forums at the Corvette Action Center!

Well I'm back & wrenchin on the 64

So I ordered.......

The sand cast Chevy finned covers with breathers..... arrgghh

The sand cast Chevy finned covers with breathers..... arrgghh
What did they send you? Steel stamped or chromed??

-Mac

What I bought

to fix the lack of breathing issue was 2 of the cast covers ( which I'm going to have painted to match ) Either side can have a breather or PVC.....

My 461 intake is WEIRD

I ordered 2 different T stat housings ( for a 64 ) .... both of em direct the hose into the D/S rocker arm cover... it's like I ordered the WRONG housings OR the 461's are not all the same...
Pix's later today...Were there 2 design's of the T stat bolt hole locations.... or was the 461 ONLY available starting in 65 foward....

100_2866.jpg Here is a photo of a 461. Will continue to look for the T-stat housing if I have one (haven't found it yet and have been looking through boxes). I don't know what year the 461 was first installed on, it was used on the L79 350HP and the L76 365HP engines in 1965.

and now the NEWS

Rim cleaned, TA radial tire ordered that will be done today.

Waiting on UPS for rocker covers.

Manifold on...

New W/P fittings in ( for engine to heater core ) ... mine were a bit funky.. better to start new, at this point.

Spare tire carrier new hangar bolts in ( Nut in frame re welded )

Who has a pix " wink wink nudge nudge ... eh ... eh"

Of how everything goes as far as distrib and vac advance specifically, coil all set up nice N neat to fit under the " dog house " ( chrome cover ) .....
My vac advance tip is pointing twds the pass side front wheel, which jacks up the mounting position for the coil ( which mounts on the pass side dog house support/ coil relocation bracket )

The spare is done ......

But I need to solve the coil issue or mutley isn't going to go for a walk.....

Say Hello to Senior Mutley & pass the tequilla...

So after going thru all the fun with the rocker covers and all. It dawned on me what frickin heads are in this.. and since the rockers covers were ready to POP I took em OFF... A little wipe down and ..... AND

If they are newer "Hecho en Mexico and pass the tequilla senor" heads, they are likely on a less than 5 yr old crate motor

Bel Air Block, No breather, Mexican heads ( with my luck 1.71/1.50 ) .......

Don't get me wrong.. I'm glad I'm going thru all this.. but just ONCE I would like to find a part on this car that is a WOW that's rare. or at least higher end stuff...

Back to T stat housing research

Mucho Gusto.....

I have several photos of engine compartment configurations (so I can put everything in it's place) 1965 365 HP engine.jpg This is using the 461 manifold and the ignition secondary wire shielding. The vacuum advance diaphragm fitting points to the alternator. You can see a depression in the runner for #8 that the vacuum canister is very close to. The coil is is to the rear passenger side of the canister. My apology to the Owner of this engine. I am using this photograph for illustrative example only.

Thanks Mark

I have found a few of these pix's.... but this one is a goodie

I found that (Hecho en Mexico) on my 350/290 H04 crate engine from GMPP. It will make a driver, I don't think that it will cause any problems until I sell the car. If I sell the car. Engine casting #.jpg

Progress but no pix

Cars about 98 % back together...
Having fun with all the venting from valve cover to air cleaner..
The stock air cleaner hits the linkage ( carb spacer to the rescue )

So after 4 hrs of this goes here.. that goes there...
We tried to fire it
Dead batt
20 min later
fired right up
Adjusted carb.. smooth
Car came up to temp... lower hose started pissing out coolant
Called it a day

Based on over 40 years of working on these things: Sounds about right!

I especially liked the "fired right up" part!

:w

Ohhhhhhhh ahhhhhhhhhhhhh

T stat housing.
461 Intake.
New oil fill tube N cap.
New Holley carb.
Original air cleaner Note needed a 1/4 inch round carb spacer to clear linkage.
Aftermarket rocker covers.
Correct fuel pump.
New metal fuel line, filter bracket & hose.
Brackets for Chrome dog house.
New linkage bushings.
All new gaskets where needed.
Relocated heater lines.

tomorrow
Plugs & timing
And maybe a " special suprize ".

Question was the gas tank cap suppost to be sealed or vented ?
Answer VENTED the 36 gallon tank used a sealed cap....

And a WEE bit more

LOOSER
The heads have peanut plug holes, so no new plugs...
The distrib at full advance in maxed out at 0 TDC... and it needs to move a tooth...need to make up a 7 degree diff. GRRRRRR.
Had to cut upper hose to put the top fill in ... still can't top system off with out that
I have the wrong waterpump.. it's short but the hole spacing is to wide to get the factory pulley on..

WINNER
New ( er ) 7 blade big block fan in. ( the fan clutch made up the difference and acted as an adaptor )
New carb linkage coupling ( grommets & nylon bushings ).

My younger son blew a turbo line yesterday so that took time away from mutley...

Test drive yesterday was MEH... the car got to the end of 180 which is hot for it....
Think it's time for a new radiator, fix the timing, HD fan clutch and take another whirl...

The never ending story....

Timing reset waiting for it to cool down ( outside )

New radiator arrived today, plus new chrome air filter top ( mine was pitted )...
So we will take a drive this evening and see if we now have MAS HUEVOS + cooling.
It's about 22 degrees total With VAC advance BTDC @ 800 rpm and the vac is pulling a strong 19"....
The NEW fuel line was WAY loose....easy fix...

Next the mystery of the steering column that was to LOW..
AND
Return to the brake pedal return AUX spring.
