I am curious as to how many owners purchased the extended service warranty. I have 10,600 miles on mine and just got it back after the dealer fixed about 7 warranty items. Although I haven't purchased the warranty yet, I am thinking that perhaps it might be worth it and was wondering what others are doing?

UPDATE: Please leave a reply with the price you paid for your warranty as well. It will be interesting to see if it varies across the country or if it is standard.

I don't think I will get extended warranty, but I was curious as to how much it would cost and if it is still available for my 96.

Let's see, had the L/S differential leak repaired, Right side window regulator replaced, and a possible slow outside temp probe. I believe the warranty paid for itself. I live near a reputable dealer I trust, Rydell. Others have had their cars come back from other dealers with more wrong than fixed. Then there is the thread where the dealer dropped the car off the lift doing an oil change...and tried to fix it! Pay now, or pay later I guess.

I got a thing in the mail about an extended warrentee but it mwas not GM and it seemed to be a little pricey to me are they a rip-off or is it worth the money?

What was the price? Around $1200 or so?

I bought an extended warranty for peace of mind. I didn't buy it for the small stuff. I bought it for an engine or transmission disaster. I see it like major medical insurance.

I also bought the extended coverage for peace of mind in case of a major problem but wound up getting my moneys worth fixing the smaller problems. The memory system for my seats failed and the rocking seat syndrome were repaired using the GMPP extended warranty. When I sold my 2000 the new buyer was able to have the warranty transfered to him for a $50 fee. Thirty days later the dreaded steering column lock occured and was diagnosed as a BCM failure so he definitely got his moneys worth.

This is a great thread. I've wondered about this many times, and need to make a decision soon.

I have also gotten offers in the mail from GM, but there was no pricing info. I've held onto them to follow up in a month or two before my warranty runs out.

I figure they are pretty pricey, but probably worth it.

I think I'll add this to the list of things to follow up on today while I'm on vacation.

This is basically an insurance business. On the whole, less is paid in claims than is taken in premiums. Otherwise, nobody would be interested in offering these plans. There are a variety of reasons that claims are not paid. A car could be sold, and the policy not transferred. The car could be wrecked, etc, etc.

They will void that warranty if you've done internal mods, right? Will they still cover you if you've done simple things like exhaust and an intake?

Edmond, I believe that intake and exhaust are OK. I think you are right on internal mods. I also wonder though if they find out if someone has reprogrammed the car if they will void it. I think that even if you reflashed the car back to the original tune, before taking it back, there might be a date associated with the flash and they can see that it had recently been flashed. Suppose if someone adjusted the gas cutoff for redlining up to higher RPM's and hit redline quite a bit. That could damage the motor as well. I am thinking about tuning my car, but not the redline gass cutoff point. I think I will call a dealer and ask such questions.

I'm with you motorman.

I recently bought a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty for my wife's 02 Z06 from Fichtner.
I saw an ad for a great deal at another dealer on a different corvette site and called the dealer ( three times). They never returned my call.

Just for giggles and grins, I called Fichtner and a little while later, Dennis Fichtner called me back. He matched the "other" dealer's price.
I made the deal right then. He emailed the confirmation and four days later I had hard copy. Three years 36k miles no deductible.
I won't say what I paid, but it was $500.00 less than my local Florida dealer could offer for the same GMPP.

Call Fichtner...they are cool people.

I bought a 6/60 no deductible for my '01 over a year ago from
Warranty Direct. Cost.. $1563.00
They are highly rated and you are not limited to going to a dealer.
You get a little card that you present to your dealer or repair shop.
They call, get approval and you're good to go.

IMO, extended warranties are a great piece of mind.
If your computer goes out, that can be $1,000.00+
If you decide to sell you car, they are transferable.
This is a big plus to a potential buyer.

I also waited two days before both original warranties ran out.
No sense paying for two at once. You only need one.

Best of luck,

Pedro

Pedro,

Thanks for the detailed reply. It is most helpful.

This is a tough call, however the number & cost of the computers used make it a lot easier. if one oor more go out........it's paid for. next seems that ZO6's will ocasionally drop a valve with nasty results (about $10,000), so in my case I think I'll pony up! most of the electronics will die before too long if they are going bad at all. By the time I have 100,000 miles on it if i need a new engine I not feel just too bad.

Not any more

Used to buy them, but never used them. Main warranty took care of the early stuff. Didn't buy it on this Towncar, and lost a transmission. It was still cheaper to fix than buy the warranty. The stuff never goes bad until the mileage or time is up.

If I would have bought it on this car it would have been a total of about $3600 for the three cars, the trany repair as I remember it was about a grand. Would have save $2600 over three cars. First two had over 90k on them and this one is at 94K so I keep them

No more for me, too expensive.

I bought extended warranty for my 3rd vette (the one I have now). My first two did not accumulate the mileage I have on this one. I bought the warranty from DAC in Ohio. I used every penny and then some. If you are going to put the miles on, then I would say get one. The one from DAC was actually better than GMPP. My service advisor said they paid more to the mechanics, so naturally the mechanics loved seeing my car!
If you are going to keep the car only thru the new car warranty, then no need to have double coverage.
These extended warranties will kick in when the original stops - whether it is 3, 4 or 5 year original warranty. Then you can decide how long you want coverage - up to 50,000 - 60,000 - even 75,000 miles. Totally up to you. Of course price goes up as mileage goes up.

I wish I would have bought the extended warranty for my Dodge Grand Caravan whose transmission went out about 2000 miles out of the factory warranty. Chrysler would not budge in any concession or relief since I didn't purchase the extended warranty. A replacement transmission ran me $3200! Although I have previously owned three Dodge/Chrystler cars, I will never buy another. Not even a Daimler/Chrysler Mercedes Benz.

I didn't have a choice since it was part of the deal and free. The car was turned into to my credit union off of a lease. Before they sell the cars they are checked out, new tires and such and thrown in the extended warranty. Before i bought the car I called the guy who had leased it and he said that he took exceptional care of it. He is waitng for the new Zzzs to come out and is going to be leasing one of those. The car has about 1 year left on the factory warranty and the extended warranty is for another 4 years. Zero deductable.

OBTW, has anyone ever heard of Member's Choice mechanical repair coverage? From what I read in the brochure the primary coverage is thru Road America.
