We just got a 99 FRC. The brakes were really bad (shuddering and vibrating when braking at just about any speed), so "we" (I use the term usely, since Phil did it and I watched ;)) pulled the rotors off and replaced them with some Baer drilled/slotted ones.

Here's the weird thing.
The service record indicated that the rotors were replaced by GM in March of 2006 (just 6 months or so ago). Here's what the rotors looked like when we pulled them off: click and click

Now, would new rotors look like this? Would they have "R" and "L" painted in childish script on them? Would they have "Made in Brazil" stamped on the inner side? Would they look so old and worn and beat up?

I am really curious. Something just doesn't seem right. Do you think someone just couldn't afford new rotors, and went with something used? Would a dealership put used rotors on a vette? Would anyone in their right mind do this? surely the dealership didn't sell someone "new" rotors and put these things on! :eek

So many questions. I'm looking for answers, speculation, whatever you got :D

Tammy

It is possible a dealer put used rotors on a used vehicle. More than likely someone swapped out the GM rotors and installed used rotors to sell the car. Only a guess.

Yes,Tammy they could say Made in Brazil on them!! No they were not new!!! I'd say they just Turned them and put them back where they were at!!! Not Unusual at all!!I mark rotors with a magic marker before I take them off and turn them,The ? is how much they had to be turned!! there is a min thickness cast in them too! Ck them out!! they were probably turned farther than they were supposed to,thats why they warped so soon!!!
As far a somebody charging for Rotors and just Turning them,It happens Too Often!!! :upthumbs

Rotors

gmjunkie, I recently put front rotors on my 88, new GM replacments, I cleaned them up, put them right on the car. A Motor Head buddy of mine said he still has new rotors turned before he uses them, it didn't make sense to turn them and I have no ill effects. Your thoughts?

You wont have to turn a GM Rotor!!! Now some After market Rotors are a different story!!

Yikes! Where can I have them checked? what kind of tool does it take, and how much $?

What record do you have?

I would look at it closely, if the seller showed you the record of new rotor and that's what you got. then the seller misrepresented the car, If I had purchased a used car using the maintenance records to help me decide if it was a good deal, then I would return to the seller and ask him to explain. May be the seller actually paid for new and the dealership pulled the fast one.

Well I have a Caliper for measuring thickness on top of my tool box,But it's not a cheep one!! I could bring it with me to the Dragon,if you want to throw the rotors in a box and stash it somewhere in your chase vehicle!:)

Last thing

I recently had a truck repaired at a dealership, one portion of the repair was a warranty and the other portion I had to pay for, Billed out and I paid for GM parts.

2 weeks later the repair I had to pay for failed. I take a look at the failed part and it was not a gm part. as a matter of a fact it was a rebuilt part with the re builders name sticker on it stating it had a 90 day warranty.

Had to argue with the dealer ship about having the truck towed in as they would only pay for the tow if it was there fault, anyways I question why the rebuilt. His first answer was to save me some money, I asked him how much did he save me with the rebuilt part as I was billed for a brand new GM part.

I really wish I had a contact in GM to let them know why I dread having my vehicle brought into a dealership for repairs. and that there own dealerships are pushing after market/ rebuilt junk instead of GM parts

Just treat me fair that all I want

I got c4c5Specialist to pull the service history. The seller (a dealer who had bought it from the previous owner) didn't represent anything about the brakes or the history. It was sold as-is, and I don't have a problem with that.

COOL! I'll bring them. Thanks! :upthumbs

Good Grief!! And they had the nerve to argue about the towing! Unbelievable :(

What a sad state of affairs it is when you can't trust your GM dealer.

I just ordered the $400 Workshop Manuals/ TSB's CD from Helm. Pricey, but doing the work ourselves (to the extent that we can) will give us some piece of mind.

It appears since they are marked Left & Right that someone may have had them turned. If they have been turned more than likely they will be too thin to turn again, usually once is all you can turn them. But junk yards mark their take off parts like this as well so it is hard to say. I as a rule turn even new rotors just to make sure they are true, it makes for better breaking and no viration, but that's me everyone doesn't do it.

Tammy the manuals will pay for them self if you and Phil is going to do even some of the work. Glad your back in a Vette, just didn't seem right :W

gmJunkie measured them for me- they had been turned too much, which probably explains why they were warped. Doesn't explain the recent entry of "rotor replacement" in the service history, but oh well. They're now in Junk's Pile of Unwanted Rotors :L

That why i hate to see rotors turned!!! If they are warped the stay warped! just replace with new one and forget it!!!

I agree for what new ones cost and the cost of turning them, is not worth messing with, just buy new! Maybe the dealer turned the rotors and charged the customer for new ones, there is some unsavory dealers out there, some of them have gone to just the bottom line, too bad!

I also turn even new rotors (and drums). Have seen too many that were not right when I worked at Firestone in college. I'm talking brand new factory rotors, too. I always ask to have a light (.002") pass to check them out.

Peace of mind-do the job once and you know it's right. ;)

That's what I do, just enough to make sure they are true, doesn't take much or I will return :mad the rotors where I got them. GM rotors are getting better I have found here lately but I still check them.

Take care,
Bill :w
