My 75 coupe has a 1990 verson of a GM SB Crate motor, with electronic ignition. Holly 600CFM carb. I'm not a mech. so bear with me.

I know that it's hooked up to my carborator via a vacuum tube to my distributor.

What is vacuum advance?

What does it do?

Do I need to have hooked up or not?

Will it change my gas milage for better or worse? (as I was told by one person)

I'm trying to learn, any info would be helpful.

Thanks

The 'How Stuff Works' website has an entire automobile area. You can click on various categories including Engines, Transmissions, Drive Train, Accessories - with easy to understand explanations (including animated graphics).

Check it out: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/car.htm, or if you want to read specifically on ignitions, check out: http://www.howstuffworks.com/ignition-system.htm

Click on this link:

Then scroll down to "Distributors & Timing", and click on "Timing 101 Article.pdf"; I think it will answer your questions. :)

JohnZ and others, thanks again for all the info. I printed some of it to add to my library.
