Went out to start the car to warm up before the drive to work this morning and when I turned the key I heard a click and everything went dead. While checking the cables everything came back on, turned the key and everything went dead again. Started to get out and power came back, turned the key and everything went dead again. By this time I am getting frustraited. Started to get out of the car and power came back. Wiggled the cables and still had power. Turned the key and no power. AAARRRGGGGGHHHHHHH! :bash:W:bash
So I called into work while I was still somewhat calm.
I went thru the schematics and couldn't find anything that would account for this.
SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!
battery cables/connections
ignition switch
clutch safety switch
mouse

:w John,

junk is right on... Also, do you know how old your battery is?? When the weather gets cold, the term "Cold Cracking Amps" really mean a lot ;) and the older the battery, the more possible the deterioration will effect the cold weather starting.

I assume you haven't had any problems up to now starting your car... that leads me to go with junks suggestion or maybe a battery getting to end of its useful life cycle ;)

I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM YEARS AGO.CHECK WHERE THE NEG. CABLE IS GROUNDED.YOU WILL SEE CORRISION THERE.IT BOLTS TO THE FRAME UNDER THE CAR.

Yoda: Battery was purchased new in April of this year.
Junk: I did that this past weekend.
ET-VIPER: I will check that out later today. Today is the Wife's birthday and the daughter is picking her up sometime this morning for a day of shopping. I can do it then, may not have any money left at the end of the day but at least I will have the day alone with my 2nd luv.

Also check the second negative cable.
The first one is as Mr. Viper says under the rear of the vette and bolts right under the front connection diff / chassis. The second one is in the front of the car and grounds the engine to the chassis. It's on the right site somewhere between cilinder 3 and 5 or 5 and 7 and bolts under the enginemount frame. Good luck,

Groeten Peter

When you're saying "everything went dead", do you mean you didn't have any power at all ? Did you notice if the lights would come on when the door was open ? Had a similar problem last summer and it came down to a broken "fusible link" (red wires) at the starter. On 27 yrs. ols cars, these wires get brittle and are prone to break.
Just my .02

Well the problem was caused by a short inside the dash behind the instrument cluster, shorting the battery. Glad it did not catch on fire. The 8 month old battery is bad also.
