Now, I know this is going to sound really dumb, but I looked everywhere in my FSM and couldn't find anywhere where it tells you how to remove the fuel rails. You know the plastic covers. How do I remove them?

Thanks again.

Paul

Thats what he's looking for John!! I think he's wanting to check the Vacuum check valve!!:upthumbs

You guys are right! Thanks. And Junk, didn't you say there was a fuel schrader valve under there somewhere? I'd like to check the fuel pressure because after I do all this work, I'd like to see if I don't have a fuel pressure problem. I am going to do this soon:

Replace the PCV valve
Remove and clean the EGR
Clean the IAC
Replace the fuel filter

The hard starting is getting more common and it pi**es me off! I gotta figure this out. I've been copying the pages out of the FSM and getting ready to make the time to do all this work, plus, I have to pass emissions within a few weeks.

I put some Lucas injector cleaner in a full tank of gas, I'm getting ready to change the oil and filter, and any suggestions on replacing the transmission fluid, I was thinking of taking it to one of those oil change places I used to use the oil in my truck but from what I have read in the FSM you need to drop the pan, replace the gasket and filter. Is that necessary?

Thanks.

Yep,the schader valve is under the e "held" in Johns lower photo!! The Check valve is the black thing right below it!!

Change the fuel filter before you check the Fuel pressure!!

It's the "ONLY" way to change the filter in the transmission!!

:upthumbs

What I meant was,is it best to replace the transmission filter or just do a flush?

Junk, another question, will a cracked manifold (which needs to be replaced) cause and emissions failure?

Thanks for your help as always.

That check valve, does that need to be replaced? It doesn't look like a PCV valve.

Thats up to you!!I,m not into the Flush thing, sometimes I think it does more harm than good!! Just my opinion.:upthumbs

Yes,at least it would here!!:D

Not if it's not leaking and working properly!!:upthumbs

Thanks Junk about the manifold, now, what is that black check valve and what does it do?

Black check Valve

This check valve has a vacuum line to the cruise and one to the automatic heating cooling system. If you are unsure if it is good or not just replace it with an AC Delco part for about $7.00 it is the cheapest thing you can fix on a Corvette. Junk jump right in here I can't remember the test procedure you have for this valve.

Put a short piece of vacuum line on the big end and try to blow through it,and then try to draw air through it!!! You shouldn't be able to blow through it,but you should be able to draw air through it!!!

Transmission Fluid Change

Drop the pan to change the filter and also to clean out the pan. Once you've done it this way, you'll see why. It would be nice to change all of the fluid too but there's tons of crud in the filter and pan.
When changing the filter make sure the 'adapter' comes out with the neck of the filter. I use a really long set of needle nose pliers to extract the 'adapter' or seal. It's about 5/8' long, made of rubber and metal and seals the filter neck to the case. If you can't get the old one out, it will work OK but whatever you do, don't get two of them up there. The filter won't seat and the pan will hit the filter.
This sounds like a much bigger deal than it actually is. Just don't put two seals up there.
Good luck.
PS I use a child's small sand box (made of vinyl) that's about 3' in diameter under my drain pan to catch the splash when the pan comes off. NAPA (and other stores surely) sell a more expensive gasket/filter that is really worth the money (about$18). The gasket is rubbery with holes small enough to hold all those pan bolts in place. After cleaning the pan (especially the magnetic filing catcher), put the new gasket on the pan and start all of the bolts a few turns. Then every thing is ready to screw back on. Start all the bolts before tightening any.

Thanks jmc! I have decided to have my mechanic do it while they replace the cracked manifold. I don't really want to bother with the mess.

Hey Junk & John, thanks for the photo and the hillbilly test. If it works then any test is okay with me, even a hillbilly test!
;LOL:rotfl

I must admit john Robinson your engine looks so clean, after buying my 96 CE LT1 which was so clean, and now I see oil on the valve covers around some of the bolts on top, is there a seal that is below the bolt heads ?? or do I need to just replace the Valve Cover Gaskets.
Thanx
Gordon

Hey Junk, is that the only place you find the schrader valve? I just had the covers off and I found a schrader valve on the fuel line back on the back of the fuel rails (near the firewall). Is there another schrader valve actually on the fuel rail?

Yeah, Junk, I was looking at the fuel system in my FSM for my 94 and the schrader valve is at the rear. Could you quickly walk me through what to do when I have the gauge connected? Do I just turn the ignition to on a couple of times and look for 47 pounds?
