84 brake booster / vac line

the other day while i was doing some cleaning i had the hood up on my car while it was running and heard a very distinct hissing coming from the area of the brake booster... after a quick inspection i noticed a inline filter in the line from the booster to the motor.... the second i took the filter off the cars idle smoothed out and the little miss in the low end went away.. itook the filter and found that it is totally clogged. i looked it up and see that some cars have this filter and some dont... as of right now i have the hose running from point a to point b without the filter in place mainly because i cant see to find a new one listed anywhere (of course i dont know what to call it and there is no part # on the original) my question is do i need it... the obvious says yes because something was filtered out and caused the original to clog... but why was it eliminated in later models?

It was added to stop fuel vapors from entering the booster and destroying the diaphragm. Replace it if yours was OEM.

I'll check mine to see if it has a number. I replaced mine once myself and saved the original in the replacement's packaging. I know wacky...but I save everything since I have that museum mentality and dont trust NCRS to know their posterior from their elbow when it comes to originality. BTW, OEM has a nice chromed ring on them at center...new ones dont :eyerole
As to why later cars dont have it.... Maybe something to do with better diaphrams...or the switch to plastic boosters? Maybe they just moved it ...and its better hidden? Not needed on later because they burn fuel better?

Ok. That was easy for me to find. At Top of Archival Bin! Should be easy to find 4 U 2. It was used in MOST GM cars from 78-91.
Mine is by "DORMAN" part# 705-026. It also ironicly says "Replace IT" in GIANT letters on Left side of a bright orange package.

I just googled it and Corvette Central has the one with proper look chrome ring as well. No direct link their site is weird. Its $30.95. I think I paid under $10!

ya think the $30 one is better than the $6 one...... thanks a ton..... i cant believe how much better my stupid car is running since i found that.... and thats after replacing every sensor and what not that there is......

Just think how much more $ you COULDA spent before finding the problem.Its funny that when the car runs poorly with what's may be a vacuum leak...NOBODY ever suggests checking that filter!

I dunno which is better...mine was under $10 (1998 ish)and it works just fine for about 10 years. I remember actually just stumbling across it in a auto store and thinking. "Hey I've got one of those and its almost 15 years old..."

The $30 price seems ridiculous and I'd never pay that unless somebody on here gives me a legitimate reason to buy pricey one over "el cheapo". Me thinks the "Vette" parts gouger is at work! We need a Smiley with dollar signs for eyes and a "cha-ching" sound.
Of course it IS "prettier" with the chrome ring!

yea funny how nobody ever even mentions it....... i never knew it existed and to be honest the hissing coming from it wasnt really that noticeable..... i just happend to be leaning down trying to locate a bad plug wire and head it.... im gonna put a thread up about it, i wonder if it was bad in my 82 also.

this is a CHECK VALVE you can order one from Ecklers or Corvette Central catalogs

The old ckeck valve plugged, I have mention this exact thing on more than 1 non consecutive occasions.
