I go to sleep at like 5am or so.

It turned out the filler tube seal wasn't broke off in the hole. When I pulled the seal off the tube, it rolled up some, and I thought the rest of it had broken off. Though, there was a little chunk on the end missing. I've got the tube back in and bolted back on. Though, I'll have to mess with it more tommorrow to make sure it is on there tight.

The pan is pulled and I bolted it back up with 2 screws. I decided to replace the gasket since I had stuck something in the pan to pull it away so I could drain some of the tranny fluid.

What gaskets do you guys use? The GM one looked like a black paper gasket or something. They have the rubber type gaskets at Autozone. And I could order the Felpro gasket, but I'm not sure if it is rubber or like the GM one.

I also noticed another tranny leak. I had seen this before but thought it was just grease from the U-joints from what I was told. But after I jacked the front end up, I noticed a little wet spot under the U-joint area. I looked up and could see some tranny fluid under the brace piece under the U-joints. What is it that could be leaking tranny fluid back there?

Passenger side under U-joint area:

Here's a side pic from the diver side:

I noticed some red tranny fluid under the yoke thing that comes from the tranny on the passenger side. I have it circled where I saw the tranny fluid, but the pic is of the driver side cause I couldn't get a good pic of the passenger side with that shield piece in the way:

You can see where the fluid has been slung:

If it were mine I think I would leave it.

What?? Miss out on taking 2 days of bonding with your Corvette to do a 1 1/2 hour job!!!:boogie:boogie:boogie

I am not familiar with the automatics as I have a six speed but you could have a rear seal out, considering that the yoke is slinging the oil. It could also be a leak around the speed sensor. Always possible that the gasket for the tail shaft housing is leaking. Are you sure it didn't come from the pan gasket area? With air turbulence under the car the oil follows some strange paths. With the fill tube leaking it is hard to say where the oil ends up.
I have had poor luck with any rubber gaskets on engine or transmission, seems like the screws work loose or the gasket shrinks. I have put most transmission pan gaskets on dry .The dark fiber looking gaskets are quite good if the pan isn't dented at the bolt holes from over tightening .

Something has to be leaking from the rear. I don't think it was from the filler tube seal leaking. As that would have to be like the magic bullet to get to where the fluid is. I did think that maybe the fluid ran to the back, but there isn't any fluid at the back of the pan. Just at the Tranny yoke, and where it dripped which is on that brace below the drive shaft. And you can tell where it has been slung.

I don't think that filler tube seal was a bad leak till I lifted it to flush the brakes. A while ago I had noticed some tranny fluid at the corner of the pan, but there wasn't anything on the ground. A week ago I lifted the rear to flush the brakes, then the next day I noticed a large shinny spot on the ground. Then I noticed a slow drip. I can see how that filler tube seal could leak, cause the outside of it is smooth. Whereas the replacement seal has ridges on it.

Ok, I got it done a few days ago. I used a rubber Felpro gasket for the tranny pan. The only problem I see is after I got it bolted on, I noticed a few places at the front of the pan where the gasket overlaps the metal dust shield.

Are you supposed to lower the dust shield before you bolt the pan down?

I haven't filled it up yet with tranny fluid. I was gonna wait till I got a few parts before I can start the engine again. That way, if it leaks, it won't be leaking for weaks.

Ok, I filled it up with 4 quarts of tranny fluid on my 89. I ran it and got it up to temp, and there wasn't any fluid on the dip stick. So, I put another quart in. And again no fluid on the dip stick, maybe some on the tip, but that is all. So, I put another quart in, and put it through the gears while in park, got the coolant up to 200*, and again just a little bit of fluid on the tip of the dip stick. So, I shut the engine off.

I thought when you dropped the pan, it took 4 to 5 quarts? I've put 6 quarts in, and it is still showing low. I don't see it leaking anywhere, and the level has always been full when I've checked it in the past. So, should I just keep dumping tranny fluid in, or maybe I'm doing something wrong?

I've always checked the tranny fluid in the past with no problems. But I've never dropped the pan before, so maybe more came out? I do believe the pan is stock.

Hi josh, Seems strange. I see capacity as 4.5 quarts. Is the pan stock, is the dipstick the correct one ? Roger.

The pan should be stock, as is the dipstick.

Though, the car had sat for at least 3 months when I pulled the pan. So, is it possible that more fluid could have come out since it had been sitting for 3 months? Or would that not matter?

When cold and engine not running. The fluid mark is in between the hash marks on the dip stick. So, I at least know fluid is in there. I think what I'll do is go drive it for around 10 miles, park it while it is idling. And then check it again. If it is still low, I'll just start adding another quart of fluid and see how that goes.

Man, this cheap $3 seal fix is turning into a $60 fix. Haha.
