Was out on a nice drive last weekend and got the dreaded nickel size rock :bash in the windshield and now I face the task of having to get the windshield replaced. I haven't called any of my local glass companies yet but does anyone have any advice on what I'm up against replacing it on my '81? Is the glass available? (Not too concerned about original numbers on the glass) Do the guys replacing windshields now days have any clue on how to do it on an older 'Vette? Maybe I'm paranoid but what say you guys?

Depending the size of chip and location, they can be repaired for $35-$50 at most glass shops!:thumbI'd try that first,I've had a few windshields fixed that way,the guy that comes around here is really good at it! You would have to use a Microscope to even see a peck mark!!:thumb:thumb

Don't worry about the windshield. Even here in Holland they have them in stock at a regular repairshop, of course not matching and the price is also right.

Remember to don't glue the windshield like modern cars but with a shick rubber like role.

But like Mr. Junky says, first look it it can be fixed. :)
Good luck!

Thanks guys, I'm going to take it over to the local glass shop tomorrow and see if they can fix it. Interesting about the glue, but I must admit I don't know what "shick rubber like role" means but I'm sure the glass shop will. :cool

They, haven't used butyl type sealant for windshields on American cars since the Early to Mid 70's!!:thumb

cruzin in your fine american sports car...
have a heiney for me..:w

Early C3s have windshields that are more difficult to replace, but the '81 windshield seems to go in like more modern cars. I had mine replaced a year or so ago with no problems, but be sure to take care of any rust you might find, don't just put it in over rust.

God bless, Sensei

I don't know either. Normal typo for me.. :W It should be sticky rubber-like role. But the only thing you need to keep in mind, the glass isn't directly fixed to the steel frame, if you do the glass will to far "in" the frame and all the surrounding moldings will not fit to the glass. If you / when you take the old glass out you'll see what to use.

Also a thing to consider, my old glass looked like it got sandblasted. New glass after a new paintjob and it looks great again.

@Bucket, thanks I'll do my best (after I finish the body off) :)

I thought I "heard" someone in here (CAC) discuss the possiblity of rusted windshield frames, and how the shop won't put the replacement windshield if rusted.

Hey Yoda, do you know anything about windshield issues for 1981's?
