I know it sounds dumb, but get one of those insect bombs and set it off in the car with the windows up. Dont go near it for a day but the mice and any bugs will be gone. You said you were going to gut it anyway so it wont hurt anything.

NO question you should rebuild. Pieces of pistons have a nasty habit of getting in the way of other pieces causing a real failure, been there done that. Anything as bad as those photos show is a catastrophe waiting to happen and then in will not be cheap.

I have been running convertibles for over 40 years and never put the top up unless it is raining. Never had a top wear out or fail during that time. Current 91 has 125000 on the clock and the top is never up except for winter storage and for that I do advise storing with the top up.

They do make a tool for this available from one of the vendors that sell Corvette parts.
