    Mufflers or Cats ?

I'm going to take the contrarian view here, and recommend some good low-restriction mufflers. Restriction, or backpressure, is additive, and those mufflers on your '92 are pretty restrictive. The reason "flow" numbers don't mean much on the exhaust side is that the pressures involved are so...

    The Screen on my MAF

I removed the (2) screens from my MAF at about 55,000 miles; now have right at double that mileage and no ill effects. No driveability problems, but no great seat-of-the-pants boost either. Remove the screens if you wish using the TPIS-recommended method: use a thin knifeblade to pry loose the...

LT1 Coolant and Oil Temp changes

I'd guess that what you had at 78,000 miles was a thermostat that was stuck open, so coolant temps ran lower than with the new new, nominally lower-temp 'stat. I find it odd, though, that you had oil temps running 197-205, just an 8 degree range, when ambients ran 80 - 95, a 15 degree range...

SHEESH $573.00 for a MASS Airflow Sensor???

That was maybe $100 for the part... and $473 for knowing which part to replace! :)

    84 Vette A/C Compressor

This sounds just like what my '89 does; you feel the "pull" so much in the Corvette because your normal road-load horsepower requirement is so much less in the Corvette. The 10 HP (or more) the A/C draws is a considerable fraction of what it takes to pull that car down the road. Your dually...

    AC compressor clutch problems

"Was driving saturday and saw a puff of smoke comming out of the front. Stopped and discovered an ooze of what appeared to be burned plastic comming out from around the AC clutch. " I'm very familiar with this problem, having had it happen to my '89 3 times before I finally wised-up. It's...

    160 Thermostat

I cannot give specific's on a 1993, but I'll bet you could install an inline manual switch to turn the fan / or fans on at the flip of a switch under the dash when in traffic or hot conditions. I can say that this worked wonderfully well on my '89, and has the added benefit of improved A/C...

    Tune up

He states that is a term he picked up in high school when he worked for the F*rd dealership. Never can tell what sort of bad habits you can pick up around a Ford dealer! And having previously worked at Ford for 15 years, I can say that. :)

    Gas mileage question

15 mpg city traffic is perfectly normal; mileage doesn't really get good until you're above the torque converter lock-up speed, which is 37 MPH in my '89 w/ 3.07 gear. But 51k miles is plenty on a set of plugs! By that mileage mine needed new wires, too. Made a big difference in performance...

It is US against them, a call to arms!

I don't think there's any lack of information or lack of consensus on what it takes to make an SBC go fast. Go to Lingenfelter or TPI Specialties for all the information you can handle. Or afford. The simple fact is, so many tuners work on Mustangs because there are literally millions of...

Stock '92 Exhaust, come and get it

I'd take it in a heartbeat if Dracout weren't so far from Denton, Texas!

    LT4 LT4 Tuning (long)

Connecting a pressure gauge to your exhaust air injection ports won't tell you a thing at idle - there has to be a significant amount of exhaust flow. Best would be to check it with both the engine and the exhaust system fully warmed-up at say 4000 RPM, at WOT. 6000 would be better; wide open...

    Tune up

That unmentionable in the aircleaner would be your crankcase air intake filter, the "clean" side of the PCV system. When manifold vacuum draws engine fumes etc. through the PCV valve from the crankcase, clean air comes into the engine via that filter. I knew you were just dyin' of curiosity...

"normal" operating temps? and hot center console

Almost sounds like there's a problem with your coolant temperature switch if the fan cut-in temp varies that much. Also, I'd say good luck with the "Water Wetter"; I tried it with a thoroughly-flushed system, along with the recommended amount of antifreeze, and saw no difference in engine...

"normal" operating temps? and hot center console

And of course there are variations between model years: my '89 has a 190 thermostat, and the cooling fan comes on at the incredible temp of 228F ! if left to its own devices. Not being able to leave bad enough alone, I switch mine on manually when it gets over 160.

    Distributor cap question - '92 LT-1

Re: Optispark Could it be because they never have to deal with an old one? The only cars they see are less than a year old. Sure, they put miles on them, especially in durability testing, but you'll never convince me that time can be accelerated, like mileage accumulation is! Or would it...

    Distributor cap question - '92 LT-1

So what the parts guys were showing were in fact 'F'-body parts, not as they claimed Corvette parts? Somehow I'm not surprised.

    Distributor cap question - '92 LT-1

Got a question: I've been looking for a cap and rotor for a '92 LT-1; I've found parts at local shops, but the white plastic adapter plate included doesn't fit my distributor. The cap in the kit would fit using my adapter plate, however. When I looked at rebuilt distributors, they were just...

"normal" operating temps? and hot center console

Rich: FWIW, at 70 MPH, level road, my oil temps are 105F higher than ambient. That is, if it's 70 out, oil is at 175F. If it's 105 out, oil is at 210F. The temp differential is greater at higher speeds, less at lower speeds. And regarding coolant boiling points: contrary to what you might...
