A/C compressor leak on my '86 Coupe.

Add me to the list, totally doable all you need are gauges and a vacuum pump and advice you can get here! Put the dye in it, they also make an o-ring sealant-lube called nylog and some mosture cure sealant to stop future leaks you just have to decide if you want to go that far. The GM R-4...

    Shock Replacement-When??

The yellow bilstiens can be rebuilt for about 1/2 price Here's a phone number. (800) 537-1085 They have a web page, just search for Bilstien America. I don't know how to tell if they are bad. They are high pressure gas shocks, if you take them loose they will expand all the way out...

    Identify J55 Calipers

Does anyone know how to identify J55 calipers? I've see a pair and supposedly they are J55 calipers but they don't have any numbers I can reference. I measured the width inside from the machined surfaces, where the pads contact the outside and inside behind the pistons they measured 2 11/16...

2 Piston Caliper Brackets for 85-87

Does anyone know a source for caliper brackets to mount J55 calipers on an 87? I found them at corvette central. Anywhere else? I want a one piece bracket. I've sent baer an email and they never answered. I think they use one on their Track kit. Thanks, JS

    1986 AC Recharge

If it's still cooling and you don't have to much oil slung out on your hood (compressor shaft seal leak) it won't take more than a pound or R-12 to top it off. Last I saw was about $35 a lb. It only holds about 2 lbs completely empty. Any of the drop in replacements FR-12, hotshot, envirosafe...

    Catalytic Converter

If I were you I'd do 2 things 1st, and they cost under $10. 1. Get a bottle of good fuel injector cleaner. Techtron or Redline, (I'm sure there are others) 2. Get a bottle of gas line dryer, which is plain ol methol alcohol if you can get it, not rubbing alcohol it is already 60% water. Anymore...

Fuel Injector test results (ohm test), what do you think?

Those resistance readings are not that far off. If any of them are causing a problem it's the low one. Old injectors may be leaking down, does the starter run a little longer after it sits a while? Get a fuel pressure gauge, hook it up and see if it holds pressure like it should. I had a leaker...

    Tires for a 87 Z52

I have about worn out a set of Firestone SZ50's. The only reason I won't go with the same again is Kumho's are lot cheaper and I have heard good remarks about them. Look at tirerack.com JS

    Finally found it!

I think the clunk you all are talking about is in the posi unit not the ring and pinion. If the ring and pinion get that much play in them they are history in short order. Old wives tale: if you go messing with the adjustment on a used ring and pinion you will end up with a noisy (winning)...

    front end problems

If it doesn't shake until 55mph it is usually a balance problem. I have over 200k miles on upper ball joints that SHOW NO WEAR The lower ball joints on many years have a ridge on the zerk, GM says they are OK until the ridge receedes up inside the ball joint. I got over 150K out of my 87's and...

Rear Wheel Bearings hard to do?

I have seen rotors so frozen up with rust they had to be heated to get them off. Take a propane torch and heat it in a couple of spots and hit the rotor between the wheel studs and it will finally come loose! Ditto about the u-joints, it is easier to get the bolts out of the spindle with the...

    Fuel Pump..OEM or Aftermarket?

My 87 made 215K before it died. From the first sputter to stone dead was about 5 minutes! I think time on has more effect than milage. Pep Boys had a Delco pump, I think it was $80 or so. Get the new strainer sock and a fuel filter. If you are ever planing a lot of hp might look into the...

Changing upper and lower ball joints

You can rent for free (you just leave a credit card deposit) a balljoint press for the lowers at AutoZone. Support the control arm with a floor jack. If you don't have a floor jack get one, decent cheap ones are @ $60. JS

    Guy got his wheels back!

Got this from the fiero site, don't know why the guy didn't have locks if they were nice wheels. JS PROTECTING YOUR FANCY WHEELS Here’s a heartwarming story of good triumphing over evil. A fellow had installed fancy new wheels and tires on his sports car, but only got to enjoy them for...

Do it yourself upper and lower ball joints, 92 LT1

    1. Before you change ball joints, ARE they bad? GM ball joints aren't major problems, most are replaced because they have busted boots, not because they are worn out 2. What shocks are you going to replace? The bilstiens can be rebuilt for about half what new ones cost if you can stand the...

CLEAR XENON HEADLIGHTS Anyone Ever Try These ?

http://www.danielsternlighting.com/Take a look at his site. He has Ciebe E-Coded lights. He won't sell you the high watt bulbs without a relay kit. I have the 100/130watt bulbs and the 2 headlights pull 18 amps on low beam. I think that much current would toast the factory wiring. The e-coded...

87 Headlight Motor Twitch and brush assy

I did a search and didn't find anything. My headlight motor "twitches" onces it gets all the way up. What tells the motor to shut off when it gets up? It sounds like it keeps trying to crank up again and again. I changed out the big gear, mainly to get the new bumpers the gears themselves...

    Drain plug location for D36?

We drilled up from the bottom on the right back side. Mostly because it was easy. My buddy who works on outboard motors had spare magnetic drain plugs. The hole we had to drill was about 3/8 inch. Hasn't caused any problems and it's been in there for 4 or 5 years now. JS

    Lifter noise on 2002 Coupe

Man, I think you guys are overdoing it. If the thing shuts up after it warms up you just have what we used to call cold piston slap. Go listen to a couple of 60's hot rods. The pistons are aluminum, they grow when they warm up. Piston design has some effect on it to. It's not a buick! Now if...

    Lower Ball Joints

If you replace those ball joints AutoZone loans the tools out for nothing. They push in and out easy. Getting the spindle off the old joint you either need a tool to go in between the upper and lower studs and push the bottom one out or you can make it with 3, 1/2 or so bolts and a couple of...
