Closer
So had some time this afternoon. I ran a 12 Gauge stranded wire from the sending unit/fuel pump to the chassis and engine close to where the battery grounds are. My gas gauge now reads the same if the engine is running or not and it is reading as close to accurate as I can calculate. So...
For those who may have a similar problem, I removed the pump relay and jumper-ed between the hot line and the line going to the pump so with the ignition on but engine not running the pump would run continually. Observed the gas gauge reading with the pump running and not running. The reading...
I also posted this on another similar site with little response also. One person there suggested a bad ground. Not sure how a bad ground could cause the different readings when engine is running verses only the ignition on. But maybe it is ground. The ground is common for both the fuel sending...
The reason for replacing the sending unit is because the old one was causing a gauge reading if just under 1/4 tank and yet I ran out of gas. Though I didn't do as much testing on the old one, the results are the same. Anyone want a possible good used sending unit:)
1984
Ran out of gas with fuel gauge reading just below 1/4. Bought and installed new fuel gauge sender. Tested out of tank and reads full with arm up and empty when down. Reading between one bar and no bars and the reserve light on. Noticed you have to wait for gauge to get a proper reading...
1984 Occasionally the starter will not work. I believe it is the starter interrupt relay as part of the security system. I want to just bypass this relay since there are many issues with the security system that I have no interest in repairing. I have the shop manuals but can not be sure where...
1984, many of the sensors for the anti thief system are broken or missing. I have no intention to get it working. Up to now I have not had a problem, then today car wouldn't start. Nothing no click or any other sign of life, except the dash lit up. Fortunately I was in a position so I could roll...
Almost any auto parts store, They are cheap, less than $10. The "parts" are just diferent connectors to connect the gauges and R134 filler hose. They suggest changing the dryer, which cost < $30.00. real cost is evacuating the old R-12 then pulling a vacuum which requires a special pump or go to...
still looking for what the static pressure should be in A/C unit. I am thinking I may have overcharged the unit so the pressure switch that controls turning on the fan may be set without the unit running.
So a little background. A/C was not working, the compressor clutch was not engaging. Using the Service Manual, including the addendum electrical one, concluded there was probable not enough Freon. Bought a kit to convert from R-12 to R134. In the process realized there was virtually no R-12...
As the OP I would like to state the closer of this subject for me. After cleaning between the A/C and water radiators, wasn't that much, I decided to replace the radiator since the cost and work required to remove and test it was about the same as replacement. After little difference I replaced...
last night while cruising down the freeway at about 70MPH the temp went from about 170 to about 163. It was quite cool outside. My 4-3 jumped out of OD due to the lower temp. When I got off freeway for the remainder of my trip home, still fairly cool outside the temp climbed up to 190-200...
Both posts seem to support my thoughts that the cooling system is not working properly. I will investigate the external part of the radiator, and the deflector which sends air to it.
Question; is the normal operation; The engine temperature comes to about the thermostat rating and stays there...
1984 I think the last owner put a 160 degree thermostat. Start engine and feel hose from the thermostat housing. Starts to warm as dash reading gets close to 160. At about that temperature (160) it gets quite hot indicating the thermostat opened. Watch gauge and note fan comes on at about 232...
As a follow up. I purchased a rebuilt OD unit and rebuilt the 4 speed myself. While trany was out I removed the clutch to inspect. Found both the flywheel and pressure plate had groves. Someone replaced the clutch (because it was not worn down to rivets) without replacing the above damaged...
Just got rebuilt 4-3 back in car. There is a line that connects to the rear top of the OD section. Down loaded the rather simple vacuum line diagram and it is not shown. There are a couple of vacuum lines going no where, but they do not seem to be the right size for the line from OD unit. The...
Well, paid a shop to pull the input bearing, he said he would press the new one in for free when I am ready. Pulled everything out the back and disassembled the front section. Purchased the kit from harbor tools and pulled rear bearing. Will order rebuild kit with syncro rings Monday when I can...
