My 62 'Vette came to me with non-standard small gauges and Tach. I've decided to rewire the car so I am replacing the gauges and Tach with "62 Corvette style" instruments at the same time. I have the parts. My questions if I may:
  1. Is there a special way or sequence to removing the dash cluster in the 62? I do not need to remove the speedometer for my project unless it's part of the deal that makes it "easier".
  2. Are any special tools required to remove the cluster?
  3. Any "tricks of the trade" on this effort that you would share or advise?
Next, I do want to send the "real" Corvette Tach out to be calibrated/repaired. I bought it on eBay and frankly am not sure if it works. I also want to get it refaced to be a high horsepower 62 Tach. Can you recommend a reasonably priced Tach repair/calibration service?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Yup - Corvette Specialties of Maryland (Brian Tilles), www.corvettespecialtiesofmd.com :)

Ray "showed me the way" to pull the dash apart - via material already in my library of "stuff" since I got this car. :eek Ray, thank you!

John, your confirming what I had found in my research on a Tach restoration place. My only confusion about Corvette Specialities of Maryland is their order form is specific to "up to 61" for Tachs. I have the form printed and the Tach ready to go, but I'm waiting until Monday to call and ask about the 62.

Again, thanks to both of you for helping move to the "next step".

Those boxes on the form, only for "'55-'61", are to indicate to them whether the tach you're sending in is generator-driven or distributor-driven, as the guts are different (one reads cable speed, one reads twice cable speed); 62's are all distributor-driven.

The guts are the same just the calibration is different.
Also wanting to say hello to Mr JohnZ- met you at Carlilse I'm the young guy that was with Joe Ray Saturday night.
I can help on the gauge restoration as well- VetteInstruments@aol.com

Hi, Jason - hope you had a steak or two while you were at our Vetteheads.com tent - hard to beat filet mignon and ribeyes! :D

If you haven't removed your dash cluster yet, I would label all wires. I took a digital picture of the back of the dash and coded all the wires to match their location on the dash. This made it much easier to make the connections when it was time to replace the instrument cluster into the dash.
