I just finished painting my 67 tri power coupe last weekend- i stripped the under hood paint but not sure how to reproduce the thick paint or undercoat-it seemed to be like under seal or tar type substance--it was original--can anyone help with what to use -has anyone else ran into this?

I'm not into judging, I'm sure someone here will give you the "correct" products to use............

but on my '66 I used Krlyon semi-gloss blk, and black rubberized spray undercoating (for the locations they used undercoating)...... i tried to match the factory amount/locations/thickness/texture

There was no undercoat-type paint material inside the engine compartment - the firewall, inner fenders, and hood inner panel were "blacked out" with an eggshell-gloss black lacquer. Krylon #1613 Semi-Flat is close, John Deere "Blitz Black" is even closer (it's available in rattle cans and in quarts from your friendly John Deere dealer). There was a light application of an undercoat material in the wheel wells to keep stones from creating "stars" on top of the fenders, but none inside the engine compartment.:beer

hood paint

the hood had the original paint on it and the under side appeared un touched-the only reason i stripped it off was due to the material was flacking-it material appeared original also-and it was a thick type paint or tar material poss for heat reduction on big block cars---my small block car didnt have this same material-

Must have been added later - all cars got the same blackout treatment and material, regardless of engine.
