1992 corvette starter problem/question

I have a 1992 corvette with a six speed manual transmission. A few months ago I had a problem starting the car(87000 miles) and thought my battery was weak. I bought a new battery and it was okay, with just one exception, until a few weeks ago. Now I often get one "click" when I try to start it, and nothing else. Sometimes it takes five or six tries before it will turn over and then it starts right up. This is the same problem that I was having before I put in the new battery. Other times it starts great. I cant figure this out but the problem has become worse in the last few days.
I saw a recall #92-322-6D which sounds like the same issue but it appears to be for cars with automatic transmissions.
Has anyone else had this problem and what was their solution? Any information will be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Joe

first off, are allyour connections clean? GM starters are built with a selenoid (relay) built onto the starter. Inside there are 2 connections with a brass washer that makes contact between the two to supply current to the starter motor. The connections and the washer get burnt over time. This can cause intermitent failure,and eventually won't work at all. On most you can replace just the selenoid but usually if this is the problem , the rest of the starter isn't far behind. Sounds like your due for a new starter.

Replacing components without bench testing them first is not prudent, especially a battery, which can be readily checked to determine its' useful life for free.

The reply offered by "scav" is probably the most correct assumption...the starter may be failing. Again, your starter can be bench tested before you invest in a new/rebuild starter.

:duh Good point 6speeder. I failed to mention having it checked. Before you remove the starter be sure your connections are all clean and tight. No sence in spending money at random.

Pep Boys will test your starter for free as will most of the larger auto parts stores.

Replacing the starter is very simple. Just unhook the connections and the two starter bolts. If you do have to replace the starter, make sure to get a package of shims. They're only $3 and it will be a big waste to have to go back out to get a $3 set of shims.

Thanks guys, for your help. I now have a place to start. I thought there may have been some kind of "common" problem that occurred in these vehicles, like maybe the ignition swith was bad or something else like that. Thanks again, Joe
