Does anyone know if the exhaust pipe needs to be dropped to remove and relace the starter motor on a 1994 LT1.

My shop manual, which shows the removal of an earlier C4 starter, seems to be a bit vague when it comes to the (smaller size) LT1 gear reduction starters. I am wondering without putting the car up in the air and crawling under, how much back pain medication I will need or beer to get before starting on this project.

Thanks,
Denny

You'll have to remove the shield and unplug the knock sensor to get them out of the way,but you can get it out of there!:thumb

Thanks, that sounds like a two pill and maybe three beer project. I pick up the starter tomorrow and hope to be in shape to install by this weekend.

Thanks again for the info, it saved me from jacking the car up and crawling under to check out the situation.

OK we dropped the starter and there was a rubber gasket between the starter and the flywheel cover plate. Does this need to be installed on the new starter?

Second, the gear on the old started stuck out a bit past the housing about 3/16 of an inch. On the new starter it does not. It seem flush. Is this normal or????

There were no shims between the old starter and the block. Does it need some? The book shows two.

The new starter was installed and started the engine once. On the second attempt all the gear did was grind against the flywheel. Could that be an alignment issue? I was wondering why it worked once and not the second time.

We ordered another starter to see if I got a bad one or?? It should arrive later today.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Yes,reinstall the rubber,it helps to keep the crud out!:thumb:thumb
Shouldn't need any shims on the newer cars, better machining now days!:thumb:thumb:thumb
