I have an idea what this for, but does someone have any specific information about it, e.g. what is the RPM range one use 's or attains which activates this, sometimes it wants to use the 1st to 4th and other times it does not.

Lets say I take off gently, then normally what RPM range would turn on/activate the 1st to 4th shift light to on and cause it to shift using this feature?

While the next time I may take off a little harder and the option then is to shift normally, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc.

Thanks

Psuedomind,
The 1rst to 4th Shift is more commonly known as "Computer Assisted Gear Selection" (or CAGS). Most owners of manual six-speed C5's regard CAGS is a pain in the hiney.

I did a search and did not find the specs as to the RPM range when CAGS becomes active, although I know it's been discussed. Also, you can check out THIS THREAD for information about getting a CAGS eliminator if you like.

Its in the owner's manual. I don't have mine handy, or I would copy the page for you.

I finally found my owners manual in one of the piles on the floor.

From the manual:
The light will come on when:
  • The engine coolant temperature is higher than 169F (76C),
  • you are going 15 to 19 mph (24 to 31 km/h) and
  • you are at 21 percent throttle or less

Thanks Tammy

That answers a lot as to why one moment it would not work and then the next it would.

This is very annoying when in traffic. You can lug the motor very easily. I believe that it can cause damage to the motor, when shifting to 4th gear at such low RPM'S.

I am wondering if disconnecting this will void any warranty.

There have been questions before about whether it voids the warranty. The general consensus was "no". Many people even have the dealership do the installation. Besides, the procedure is easily reversible.

Many people think it annoying, but I have left the CAGS in place. When I am (seldom) driving easy I just put it up into 3rd when the solenoid pushes it over. Its a technique I use on my 76 with the TKO. I use 1-3-5-6 a lot my 97 will pull 3rd real well from a roll.

Why not just drive through it? There is absolutely no need to shift at 2000 rpm!! The redline doesn't come around for another 4000 rpms, let that beast wake up a little. The worst you are going to do is burn a little fuel, so what? Its a Vette right?
Ignore the impulse to shift at 2k and drive it like a world class sports car.

I would just by-pass it. It is a dangerous thing. Imagine a tractor trailer barreling down on you and you are in 4th at 20mph. :cry

It could be?

I will have to check some more, but when the light comes on of you do not shift, but just press a bit more on (get on it) the accelerator it eliminates the option and you can just shift normally.

THAT'S EXACTLY HOW IT WORKS

Yea that light tells you that you are not driving it hard enough ;LOLmaybe it should be called an "Idiot Light";LOL;LOL;LOL

Dude bypass the annoying thing. Tammy wrote this excellent article with pictures to show you how to defeat it. The mod costs next to nothing and is installed in 10 minutes.

Do IT!!.. You'll be glad you did.

I agree. I did Heavy Duty's CAGS bypass over the weekend seeing he is a long way from home at the moment. It took longer to back the car on the ramps than to defeat it. :L The very first mod. I did on mine.

I just can't stand those people who write letters to the editor in those "I hate corvette, euro-slanted car magazines." ("When I found out from the salesman that the Corvette had the CAGS, I would not have even considered the car. That's what GM is secretly not telling the general public, so I purchased a Honda instead and I'm so happy!) :eyerole

I hope that Honda goes very well with your Howard Dean for president bumper sticker pal. Probably put it right on the paint too you damn fool lol!

Yep. I agree too and thanks for the help Todd. I owe you a :beer if you decide to go to Carlisle. Actually, the longest part was lining up the ramps:L.

Man, what a difference. Also, everything worked fine. Even had some tasty Mustang on the way home:lou. I think i may have hurt John's feelings. John thought I was funning him when I told him what a PITA the CAGs can be. After the drive home Sunday I think he wants me to remove the CAGs bypass:L.

FWIW, I want to be able select any gear when I want to at anytime. It is a real PITA to be making a turn at an intersection and try to grab 2nd only to find out it is locked out. I don't know about you guys but when I am making turns ALL eyes are on the traffic and not looking at the panel to see if i have an up shift light on. By pass it. Believe me you will be glad you did.

Hey Les,
I think my post above was a record of our conversation in the driveway lol!

Tammy

I had one on my '01 Camaro SS (the same one that is now on my '04 Z06) and had some transmission problems that I had the dealer repairing under warranty. I forgot to reconect CAGs before taking it in. The service tech notice that the CAGs wasn't working and they mentioned it to me but there was not any problem getting the transmission fixed under warranty, even though what I had was shifting related problems.

Kevin

I shift it beneath or above the zone where CAGS kicks in. 1-2 at 2000 is fine in traffic. I had a taste of heavy stop and go this morning on the way to work.
