2 inch versus 2 1/2 exhaust

One thing to watch on the chambered systems is what you want to attach as an exhaust tip. I have the Mid Am. system on my '69 big block, but the system they sell "necks down" at the tip to allow for stock tips (which are 2"). I had the muffler shop cut off the 2" ends and attach larger diameter tips.

Just something to think about.

Good point. You won't gain anything by going to a 2 1/2 system if you neck it down to 2" at the outlet. You should be able to find some tips that look close to original in 2 1/2"

BTW. The '67 442 was my first introduction to chambered systems too. I had 2 of them. One I bought new. In fact I may have purchased the last pair of NOS chambered tail pipes from GM. The left one came in right away but the right one GMPD found at a dealer in Canada. This was around 1980 or maybe a little earlier. I love the sound and would not hesitate a minute to buy chambered. I'm putting it on my '69 stepside too. It depends on weather you like a louder system or not.

Yep, this is exactly what I was referring in my previous post regarding the exhaust tips. Be sure to purchase the correct tips at the same time (with the ends that are "necked-down" to 2")...

Thanks Ralph. I totally missed that! How is the volume inside the car?

Thanks again..Joe

Joe,

The sound inside the car is pretty loud, but it's an old ragtop - not much for sound mitigation! The sound is mostly out the back, and it's really loudest at WOT... it does set off car alarms, etc. :L

I also have the chambered exhaust in my Z28. I noticed that it is considerably quieter inside that car, perhaps because it's a coupe with a better sound barrier...

I have long chambers just under the seats and then smaller chambers at the end by the spare tire carrier. I also have polished stainless tips. The sound I get is not to loud. Just at WOT.

I have a '73... the tips need to be square. How hard or easy is it to find 2 1/2 inch square tips?

I've got 3" stainless with chambereds from Stainless works. If you like loud, they are great! With my foot in it they sound like straight pipes. A little loud cruising, but I still like it. I have 1500 watts of stereo with 7 speakers so if I want to drown out the exhaust--I can.

Thanks guys. I will get the 2 1/2 tips or have them fabbed if necessary. This will happen (I hope) sometime during the summer, due to a lot of pre-req work going on...Thanks again to all...joe

I have the 2 1/2 " aluminized MAD chambered exhaust on my 72 BBC. Sounds good, installed easily ( for a Vette, that is ).
