Question: 2001 C5 Transmission Cooling Line Leak

I have a C5 Convertible and just noticed I have a coolant line leak on one of the hoses... I have searched online to see what's involved to either replace or fix this on the C5 without much luck... I would like to try it myself so I don't get gouged by the dealer.... Any info or direction would be greatly appreciated.... Thanks!

Dan, first off, Welcome to CAC! We have a ton of folks here who are very knowledgeable about these cars. And hopefully, one of those folks will drop by here soon and give you a suggestion. I'm guessing that they will need more information before they will be able to answer though.

Where is it leaking? Which line is leaking. How bad is it leaking. Etc.

Give us the info as requested. I will look it up in my 2001 FSM. A line replacement should be very simple. I assume you can get the car up in the air safely.

I say that because none of the hoses going to or from the transmission carry any coolant. They carry transmission fluid.

So...is the leak in one of the small hoses running between the radiator and the transmission and which carry trans fluid or is the leak in a radiator or heater hose which carries coolant?

Yes you are correct.... I fired the email off too quickly this morning before I went in to work... I meant to say cooling line leak
and said coolant... It's the bottom hose and it appears to be leaking wear the rubber hose is attached into the steel tubing which leads into the trannsmission.... It also appears that it is leaking from where it meets into the RAD as well (Or leaking from the top and making its way down??..) If possible is it best to replace seals? Or is it better to replace the whole line (rubber hose / steel tube combo) Hopefully this clarifies things, Thanks guys

You need to clean the area and try and find out what is leaking. If it is leaking at the radiator fitting, I would remove it, lightly lubricate the treads with fluid and retighten and see if that fixes it. If it is the rubber to metal interface you have 2 options. One is to buy a replacement line. There is a union about half way to the tranny to separate the back tubing from the front. The other would be to remove the line and cut the rubber section out and replace it with a section of hose and use hose clamps to secure the hose to the metal tubing. I have done this sort of thing on some trucks before and it works quite well with no leaks and it only cost a couple of bucks. You just need to make sure that the hose can make the bend in that area without kinking and restricting flow.
