01' vert, sold the 84'.

I am having minor difficulties shifting into 1st after starting the engine. The shift is very firm and feels engaged but as soon as the clutch is released the gears start the dreadful cry of death. I also have a issue with all gears, 6th especially, that when shifting in a non aggressive fashion the shift feels like it is rubbing on something before engaging the next gear.

I would also like to know how to tell if I already have a short throw shifter like Hurst. I have the stock knob and can not see any pry marks used to remove the top cover.

Thanks

Blk84,
How many miles on your '01? I've encountered the occasional issue when my Z06 resists shifting into first. I've found that if I shift into second, going up to first at a stop will then work.

On the other hand, the other issues you've described I have not encountered. Perhaps someone else has some ideas?

Try doing the shifter adjustment first with your stock shifter. It can make a big difference in shift quality.

I would agree with this.

Here's a link with pictures. You might be able to tell from the pictures. it's considerably shorter and has a different mounting flange.

I looked at the pics and the angle of the photos makes the new setup look taller than the stock. Although I can see about 1/2" of shaft on mine so I would believe that it is stock. Post I have read regarding the stock shifter indicate that it is somewhat mushy and has a dead feeling neutral area. Mine seems to be very stiff and very positive neutral area. A little bit of dis-assembly may be due this weekend to investigate.

Where can I find information on the shift adjustment? I searched this forum and found a lot of random information. Thanks...

Corvette Mechanic.com has a couple of posts on how to do it correctly. Search under shifter.
