Nah... they're playing nice :beer As long as they don't break out the guns, I think we'll all be fine.

And thanks Remo! Still trying to get her looking "badder" :_rock

I too thought long and hard when I bought my 98 coupe and ended up regretting the automatic. I ended up trading it in on a 2000 FRC and haven't looked backed once. By the way I have a bad left leg that I crushed in a motorcycle accident when I was 19 and have a pretty good limp and a lot of pain (from climbing telephone pole the last 25 years) and I still love the 6spd.

Much of the argument about auto or manual can be traced to what people learn to drive on. Most everyone who has learned to drive in the US in the past 30 years has likely learned on an automatic tranny.

In Europe, everyone learns how to drive on a manul tranny car. The thought behind this is that if you can drive a manual tranny car, you can drive an automatic; but, not necessarily the other way around.

Most all cars on the road in Europe are manual tranny cars, even in big cities.

It's all in how you learn.

Hi mtcrsr and all others,
You just ordered -the-, no let me rephrase that, -the only- funnest to drive car built in America (oh boy there go the Chrysler flames). Whether it is and auto or a manual, you are required to do only one thing : enjoy the ride / drive. The transmission is unimportant (oh no manual fan flames). That the Vette gets your heart pumping alittle quicker is important. Even with my meager MX0 with the G92 gear, I get excited just thinking I'm driving it. The dream ends with the ride.
BTW manual or auto, don't forget to wave.

Me, I like automatic. shifting gears manualy is an un needed waste of time and effort. Let the machine do it's job. Just like power windows. why crank a window down manualy when you can just push a button. Why wash dishes by hand when you can use the dish washer. Auto matic transmission is just another conveniance that I like.
Another hassle with manual trans missions is that you have more parts to break down wear out and replace such as a clutch.
Never have to worry about a clutch repair with an automatic.

Ever try driving a auto at the track, come out of a sharp turn at medium speed and get on the gas.... .the car thinks downshift and puts you to high in the power band..... You spin...

Oh I forgot, you guys with active handling have learned to ignore physics as well.

I like to drive my car, not sit there.

My (late) $0.02

I missed this thread when it really mattered but I'd like to add my opinion as well, and this is it:

A Corvette with an automatic is like a Cadillac with a stick.

OK, I'll duck now :bu

Hi , after driving my first ever corvette (1998 coupe) for little over a year . I decided to upgrade and purchased a 2002 coupe the main reason was because I really wanted to be more in control and therefor liked the 6 speed .
I have it for about 2 weeks now and am really happy to have made this change
just my 2cents
John

Six speed.

Hey folks,

The more I read your threads, the more I feel the need for a 6 speedster!

You guys sure know how to convince people. (I have two autos)

Thaks

6-speed for me as well.
(And what's with that color poll?...no RED?) I may have to break out the pistols and take a stroll over there. :)

And The Winner Is?

Vetterred,

Like I said in the beginning of this thread - we get one of these six speed vs automatic poll/threads every few months. It's like the movie "Groundhog Day". The results are always the same - the six speed wins by 65 - 70%. And it looks like this poll is coming in right on target.

Remo
:cool

Sorry,

There is not Vettered91 anymore; from now on you can call me:
"VETTEOTHERCOLORS91" hahahahahhaha!!!! :J :L :r

hey everyone,
a couple of years ago i had major reconstructive shoulder surgurey, good thing i have the great automatic or i would not been able to drive the vette for 6 months.just because a poll says one thing doesnt mean its the right thing for you.later,Todd.

I thought that except for '53, <em>every</em> year of Corvette had some form of "red" available. It could be that more Corvettes are "red" than any other color.

O.K., I am obviously well behind here. Was there a color poll that was missing the color red? I've seen quite a few posts that use "<font color="red">color</font>" for "color".

Edit--Oops. I guess the font tag doesn't work.

I too wrestled with this subject for the 6mo or so that I was shopping for a used C5. My previous car was a STS which was lightning quick with the automatic and low gears, and very repeatable - 6.4's 0-60 every time, but in the end I could not make myself buy an automatic Corvette. It is a little bit like kissing your sister. I also have really bad knees - you should see me getting in and out of the car! - but in the end, I am really glad I got a M6. Like most Corvettes, it shifts effortlessly and smoothly, and I really didnt buy the car to drag race it. I can certainly attest to the increased resale value of the M6, as while I was shopping, I found that not only were well equipped 6 speeds hard to find and more costly, but they didn't last. I missed several while"thinking about it for a few days". In summary, different strokes for different folks, and any Corvette beats whatever is the next best, and "anything (such as shifting gears)that doesn't kill you makes you stronger".

6 speed all the way.

When I was looking into buy a Corvette there was never any doubt it had to be a manual, My opinion has always been that a sports car should have a manual transmission.

Slush boxes are for people who can't drive.

I live in Metro Atlanta and drive my Corvette as often as I can and even when I get stuck in traffic I still enjoy my 6 speed.

I even get a kick out of people who are surprised to find out it is a 6 speed!

I'm 56 and Own a 2001 coupe with a 6 speed.
When I was 21 I owned a 65 conv. W/4speed,fuel injection, and all the other goodies.
Then I had a 66 coupe with a 4 speed and the 365 motor.
ALL REAL CORVETTE's ARE STICK SHIFT'S.
If you want an auto buy a Mercedes.
