For those who did not use the aftermarket crossmember and swapped to a 700R4 from a th350 or 400, how did you address the Emergency Brake Cable? did you lower it or move it outside the exhuast pipe? Looking for ideas on this for location. Thanks in advance for all the help on this forum.

When I swapped my manual tranny for a 700R4 years ago, I did weld a new bracket on the lower left front part of the crossmember, but I had previously notched the bottom of my crossmember to accept straight 3" exhaust from the headers, so I was able to run the cable through the old left exhaust tunnel/hole. I only had to build an extension for the cable and did this with a 12" piece of 1/2" rectangular tubing with two nuts welded on the ends to connect the two cables.

You would not be able to do what I did, unless you were to notch the crossmember, so that the exhaust pipes would go under it, instead of through the two holes. Personnaly, I like it this was, becasue you can drop the exhaust without the added hassle.

What is the problem? I installed an older crossmember in my 82 and it had an e-brake pulleu bracket on it. I don't have a better pic than this:

the thing is upside down here. It fits without a problem.

Due to the bigger Tranny case, the cable hits the tranny or drive shaft(i forget which) with it in the stock location. I know it has to be moved just curious what others did. I did buy an aftermarket Crossmember, but it seemed to make the tranny sit too high in the tunnel.

I just bent the bracket a bit, I have a 700R4 too and it does not hit. It fits just fine, Do you have the corvette tailpiece on your tranny?

Yes I have the Corvette tail piece on mine. I looked at it this morning and found that it hits the driveshaft yoke. I do not think bending is going to be an option. I figure I will just make a bracket that clears and weld it on. I have come way to far to le this be a problem. I could always leave it disconected as it is not needed for inspection in MA with an Auto Trans. I would like it to work.

I bent mine pretty far, took some heat and hammering but it cleared, just.

If you have access to a sawsall and welder, I would remove it, then relocate it. I seem to remember that the bracket was not my problem, more than the fact that the cable hit the yoke. You are saying the bracket is interfering with the yoke.

The reason I am puzzled is that I left the original bracket on my cross member, but relocated the pulley assemble so the cable would not inteference.

I believe that some 700R4 trannys had different tailshaft assemblies and I must have gotten a different one from the one you have.

Why don't you consider altering the new cross member, to lower the tranny some and use it?

It is the Cable that is hitting the yoke, I think I posted that earlier but may not have. I wish I had moved it before I put the body on the frame. I am not sure I can get a sawsall into the space to cut it off, but dont think that is a problem if I leave it.

As for the crossmember, After I decided on the original over the aftermarket, I had the exhuast done. It is 2 1/2 all the way with no cats and was welded up. I would rather not disturb it at this time, but will eventually cut it and bold in a piece.

This was a small part of a much bigger process that included a new frame and engine(LT-4). I am close to the end, and plan on actually driving it for the first time today to the a/c shop to get the last of the a/c hoses made.

I am sure I can work out the cable issue, but was hoping to not reinvent the wheel. not that it is a big problem as I said earlier, but should only take a relatively short amount of time to remedy.
