I was gunning it a while ago and I felt a "clink" - like something was letting go, and the car began to vibrate. It felt like a horrible misfire - but it's not. All mounts are good (engine/trans/exhaust), all the U-joints are good. The car only has a vibration problem in gear. As soon as I throw it in drive, it starts shaking. The trans feels loose and gas mileage and power are WAY down.

I put the car on a lift and the noise is coming from the very rear of the transmission. What should I look for? I am going to be dropping the trans.

It sounds like torque converter chatter, does it happen just before the trans kicks down from O.D.?

are you sure about the location of the noise. sounds a bit like a broken flexplate.

Okay but it's not just noise - the entire chassis vibrates with it. The car also is down on power and gas mileage significantly - but it is not the engine. I think it is time for a new tranny...

I have a very similar problem with my '92. It only happens when the torque converter "Unlocks" or whille I am accelerating at a moderate rate. All C4's I have owned do this. low miles, high miles, it doesn't matter. I have owned several in the past 10 years and all the C4's did it. I was told over and over it is nothing to worry about. It does get quite annoying. Especially over hilly terrain. No "easy fix" that I know of. If anyelse knows of anything please let me know.
