79 Exhaust Replacement Suggestions?

A previous owner of my 79 L82 decided to install dual exhaust/cats. Unfortunately they didn't do a good job :( . The driver side muffler is way crooked and everything is welded so it will be a big undertaking to try to straighten things out. I am thinking about replacing the whole system and going back to a more stock configuration. Does anyone have suggestions for who to by the parts from? Mid America has what looks like a good stainless steel set with both Y pipes and a high flow cat. Are there other sources that anyone can suggest? How about a local shop in the Denver Colorado area?

Thanks!

what are your smog requirements?

If you are restoring, then you would need a more stock system. I have a 78 and I am installing dynomax ceramic coated headers with the chambered exhaust system behind it. No emissions check in MS. Many others have been please with this exhaust system. Bobchad has a good thread on his install with pictures. Good luck.

Colorado does have yearly emission test requirements that include checking the underside to verify that the cat is in place. That is my primary reason for thinking of going back to the stock configuration. Thanks for the response.

rmonty...

I too am looking to a good exhaust shop here in the Front Range Area. A shop that will work and listen to you on what you might want for your Corvette. Just don't want the usual Midas Shop that just wants to throw a couple mufflers on that they have in stock and a sale on!

I have the stock exhaust set up on my '79 and will probably stay that way, but would like to replace the mufflers with a stock appearing muffler with a loader thoatyer sound like maybe Flowmasters 50 seriers.

Our cars 1979 are elgiable to the Colorado state license plate "Collector's Plate" and if I understand it collectly we have the car tested for Emissions before recieveing the plate and that plate lasts for five years and will not ever need Emissions Testing again. Now that is how I understand it, but I haven't verified it yet.

Let me know if you find a shop in the area as I would be very interested in working with them too. Iwill keep my eyes and ears open. We have many contacts here in our local NCRS Chapter. I'll check around.

Hi Greekman, yes you are correct about the collector plates. You get one emissions test then don't have to for the 5 year life of the plates. I had considered doing that when I registered mine in January but decided to hold off another year. The cost is about $125 for the plates.

Thanks for checking around the metro area. I haven't gotten around to joining any of the clubs yet so haven't made many "Corvette" contacts yet!

I installed the Mid-America 2-1-2 stainless system with Flowmaster Delta Force 40 Series stainless steel mufflers. Great sound and noticeable performance difference over the stock trash can mufflers.
