84 crossfire need help

I just bought my first vette and it is a project...got it running but not right seems if I set the timing the car backfires misses and such if I advance te timing it runs better but still stalls and hesitant I read the codes and it shows only code 51 I have to different ECMs and two different chips but no matter what combo I use I get code 51 any help would b appreciated as I am stuck

Is there anything on the memcals (chip ) to identify that they are correct for your car

Draw a line on the front of the balancer across both the inner and outer hub rings. Start the car and see if the lines continue to align using the timing light. If not, the outer hub ring is slipping which misaligns the timing mark. So you end up retarding the timing. I replaced my balancer w a one piece Fluidamper.
