Hi all. Sorry for bringing up an old topic but I searched all the old threads and have a question that I could not find an answer to. My drivers power window ribbon broke last year so I replaced it. While I had it all apart I decided to buy a new motor also because it ran so slowly. It didn't help. I lubed and greased everything and just decided it was a poor design like I have read about and have lived with it. Well I went to roll the window up today and nothing happened. I can hear the motor make one, small, almost silent click and with the key in accessory and engine off the dash lights slightly dim when the switch is placed in the up or down position. This is telling me the motor is getting power and not running. I got it at NAPA so I think there is a lifetime warrenty but I'm not sure. Any way my question is to all who have upgraded to the 86L-96 type regulator. Is it a direct bolt in replacement? I thought I read somewhere that you have to drill 2 new holes in the bottom of the door. I can do it if I have to but I would rather not and it may affect my decision to replace the motor again on the slower ribbon type regulator. If I can just bolt it in than I think it may be a no brainer upgrade. Won't be able to get to it until I get home again in Aug or Sep (Fly Navy!) so I have some time to ponder it. I appreciate the advice given so freely here. This is a great board and good group of people on it. Mike

I did both of mine on my 84..its an easy project...The two holes on the bottom of the doors is easy to do also...It comes with a templet...or you can just measure from the exixting hole. The only difficult part is getting the car high enough to use the drill. Their is a site at http://www.corvettemagazine.com/ The technical section is down right now...but when it comes back up select the interior radio button then select search...it will give you a list of How To's...select the window upgrade. I will also post the site here when it comes back up.

Here is a link to a regulator I just bought on EBAY. Can anyone tell me if there are any other parts I will need to make the upgrade, like bolts or washers etc. or will all the hardware thats holding the old reg in be all I need? Also to those who have done this before does anyone have a template they could photo copy for me so I drill the hole properly? Thanks. Looking forward to the replies.

Thanks John, From reading that it looks like I need to find a rubber window stop that mounts in the bottom of the door in the old bolt hole. Anyone have an extra?

Thanks again Jon but I don't think those plugs are what there talking about. In the description they mentioned a rubber bar that comes with the kit that acts as a window stop. I imagine the regulator rests on it in the fully loaded position. Do you remember installing that? My other side has had the upgrade and there is definetly something rubber mounted in the old no longer used bolt hole. If you didn't put one in, my question is, does it matter or is it just a snubber to keep it from thunking on the bottom of the door on the fiberglass directly? Don't know if GM makes the rubber bar any more so I may have to get creative. Mike

I meant fully down position not fully loaded ...sorry
