Why is there no reference to the 84 vettes built in 83 as an anniversary year? 78 was 25th, 88 35th, 93 40th? We need stickers or decals for the 84 vettes built in 83. we could combined the 35th and 40th by stealing the 3 from the 35th and adding it to the 40th by removing the 4? Or vise versa.

1983 corvette ?

The answer to this question is simple. IT took so long to work out the production tooling and designs for the "1983" corvette that it was so late to bring to market, GM decided to pass on an 83 corvette and registered all the new C-4's that year as 1984 models. HOWEVER, down in the National Corvette Museum there is one 1983 corvette. It's white and has never been sold as far as I know of. Other than that one car, I know of no others that have a 1983 build sticker on the door.

I think that all Corvettes built in 1983 were destroyed except for one. That one is on display at the National Corvette Museum.

Hi Elaine, I was at the museum a couple of years back when I saw the car. It was very clean white coupe. On the windshield was a sign stating that this was indeed the only 1983 corvette built by and owned by GM. Of course we know all C-4's are 84 or later that are on the streets today I thought it was an interesting display anyway.

My 84 or should I call it an 83 has a build sticker on the door and says 83?

I believe that no matter what the build date is, the ultimate source is the VIN number, to determine the year of the car. My 94 was built in September of 1993, but that doesn't make it a 93. The 10th digit (IIRC) of the VIN indicates the Model Year, and again IIRC 1983 would be a D. My 1994 (built in Sept 1993), the 10th digit is R.

Why Chevrolet chose to "by-pass" the 30th anniversary, is beyond me, but that's the way it is. :crazy

If you researched your VIN I am sure that it will come up as a 1994. When you go to the auto parts store for an oil filter or any other part what year Corvette do you tell them the part is for?

Chevrolet has no choice, but to pass on a 30th anniversary Corvette simply because there were no 1993 model year Corvettes that were released for sale. As mentioned earlier the only one that remains is on display at the NCM. So, I guess you could call that one and only that one a 30th anniversay Corvette.

Did a search for a 1983 Chevrolet Corvette at the AC Delco web site. Guess what? No 1983 Chevrolet Corvette listed. Amazing isn't it!!! More evidence that there are no 1983 Corvettes, only the one that sits in the NCM.

Oh, I know mine is a 94. I was just trying to explain the situation to nelson84 that no matter what month/year the car was built the VIN will indicate the Model year through the 10th digit of the VIN, and that 1983 would be a "D". Why Chevy chose to not have a 30th anniversary seems a little odd. But as you say, I guess the only "TRUE" 30th sits in the NCM.

Here is the only real 83 vette...although I don't remember it being badged or displayed as a 30th anniversary car, simply as the only existing 83 model?

One reason I believe there were no '83's is because GM was considering cancelling :eek the Corvette altogether. By the time they decided to go ahead with a new model, it was late in the year, and they just went ahead with the 1984 issue, which, was one of the biggest producton years of Corvettes(because it was offered for sale for a longer period of time, part of early '83 and regular model year '84)). Also note:You can call a model a next year issue after Jan 1 of the current year.

A beautiful corvette whatever year it is

That's the corvette I saw the last time I was at the museum. Oddly enough, I have a Chiltons repair manual titled "Corvette repair 1963 to 1983" Funny

And the section on repairs for the '83 is REAL thin. :chuckle

I believe that no matter what the build date is, the ultimate source is the VIN number, to determine the year of the car.
Years ago almost all car makers released their new models in September. Generally the assembly plants closed down in late June for re-tooling and started production of the new models in August, and they were designated as the next calendar year's models.

is the car behind the 83 an 82? I like the color - anyone know what that is?

I must say I always enjoy the threads about the "83" vette.

They may call the Barbie Corvette an 83, but it sure looks like it has a third brake light - so it would be at least an 86. :w

One other oddity of note is that dealer brochures exist for the '83 -- and in reasonably large quantities. I bought one when I was at the NCM for $5...

IIRC, the story behind the museum's 83 is that it was stored under a stairwell in the factory and forgotten about until some later remodeling when it was rediscovered. All others were crash-tested or crushed because they were mules.

If memory serves me correctly, that information sign in front of the only 1983 corvette in existence tells the whole story. And if I recall the story correctly it says that the corvette was pieced together from parts that were built in 1983. I dont believe it was actually assembled in 1983, could be wrong on that, but the body was fabricated in 83 so it was designated an 83. No corvettes were ever sold as a 1983. I recall my boss at the time (Connie Kalitta) of drag racing fame, was awaiting delivery of his new vette. When it was finally delivered, it was a bronze 1984 model. We all had a opinons on the new model. I liked it.
